Emergency beer advice needed

As some of you may know, my car is going to the big car scrapyard in the sky after breaking down and I'm going to the garage to empty the boot etc tonight. The mechanics spent two days on it, and have just informed me that they aren't going to charge me. As a result, I shall be taking them beer as a thank you.

But, I hate beer and know nothing about it. Can someone recommend something decent to take that they can each take a few cans/bottles home that I can get from Asda next door on the way?

If someone gave me beer I wouldn't be bothered about what it was - I'd just be very grateful

But that said - I'd go for a fancy lager, that way you keep the typical lager drinker happy and wouldn't upset potential real ale snobs

    Therein lies your problem :P

Why not go for a selection then people can pick what they fancy?

I had one of these last weekend, a variety of flavours, quite nice I thought.

I think arran is right and you may be better off getting a selection. Go for bottles rather than cans. Warren is also right that a fancy lager is a safer bet as an ale drinker will drink lager, but the reverse is often not the case.
Generally, beer is good and I'm sure they will be very grateful for anything you give them.

You lot are about as much use as a one legged man in an @rse kicking contest . What is classed as a "fancy" lager????

Depends where you're from, I'd imagine in some parts the answer would be Stella

Go for something bottled that looks decent.

This is my problem. I don't know what "looks decent". I need names, brands, etc. I don't have a clue about beer. I don't even know what the difference is between mild, ale, stout, lager, bitter.....

Just imagine a man in the lingerie department in Selfridges. That is me on the beer aisle

Coriordan is winning at the moment tbh.

That analogy really doesn't work

Looking at what they have on this link something like Singha or Tiger are pleasant to drink, Hoegaarden and Leffe are a bit different but not to everyone's taste, playing it safe I'd go for something like Pilsner Urquell Lager as it's fairly lagery but looks like you made more effort than buying a 4 pack of Fosters

Don't buy the skimpiest lager you can find then.
Coriordan has named reasonable lagers as being preferable to utter cack, not quite up to the fancy lager title. Problem is different supermarkets stock different specialist beer so it's quite hard to name which fancy lagers they will have. But they will keep all of the big names average lagers.
Pilsener Urquell is a good shout, most supermarkets have that I think. Also Budvar is good. Any Czech beer should be a good bet.

Note the above is not the US Budweiser which is utterly vile.

I could quite happily spend hours in the lingerie department, looking all helpless and asking the lovely behind the counter for advice (in a Chevy Chase, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation kind of way  )

Some ale drinkers might. I wouldn't touch lager with a barge pole. Fancy or otherwise, lager's grim.

Huge generalisation I know. But I still think a higher proportion of ale drinkers are prepared to drink lager than the other way round. Of course there will be exceptions.

Believe me I agree that real ale is vastly superior, that's not the point I was trying to make. We converted one of our colleagues to drinking real ale by refusing to buy him lager.
