Castelli Gabba Jersey

Recently washed my gabba jersey with Nikwax Tech Wash for the first time since bought, today was the first time I wore the gabba since washing it with tech wash on our club run, the weather was windy with driving rain, but for some strange reason the rain didn't bead of the jersey, it kind of soaked into it. I got home and removed the gabba jersey to find a few wet patches on my club jersey underneath.
I have the nano flex armwarmers which I pair up with the gabba and the rain just sat on the armwarmers, didn't soak in, just beaded of them, I haven't washed the armwarmers yet since buying them.
My question is, am I doing something wrong when washing the gabba jersey?
Am I using the right wash?
Do I need to run a warm iron over the jersey after washing it?
Thanks.

hmm
i wash mine in assos cleanser, it's had umpteen washes and still very waterproof
seems like the nikwax has messed up the fabric somehow
i'd give it a thorough clean in something neutral

if in doubt, email castelli, i've had good responses when i've asked them questionsmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
As said above, just wash again in something neutral. Tumble dry on low heat rather than use an iron, this normally fixes the dwr. Sounds to me like there may have been some liquid conditioner in the wash, inadvertantly perhaps. Nikwax are very well regarded, so doubt it's anything to do with that.0

I've had a similar issue with a Sportful Fiandre No Rain jacket (different materials I know) but now make sure I run an empty washing machine cycle on high to get rid of any detergent residue before washing these high value garments. I've also got a long sleeve Gabba but given its price tag I am kinda dreading washing it
Sportful came back and suggested a quick spray with Grangers XT proofer would replenish the DWR on my Fiandre jacket, although I'm not sure you should have to do this after only one wash...Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...0 -
I wore my Gabba for months, dreading the day I would have to wash it for the first time. Meanwhile it stunk pretty bad! I was given a Nikwax Tech Wash sample sachet, so used that and washed it by hand in the washing bowl on its own. It beads pretty well still, though some small patches it soaks in more. Its such a great product, I wish it had clearer washing instructions - as many people seem to have this kind of experience.0

Wash in liquid soap or Nikwax Tech wash, then wash in TX.Direct, also by Nikwax. Chuck your overshoes, armwarmers, wintergloves in too...0

The Gabba isn't like other water resistant stuff.
The resistance is built into the fabric with silicon balls, so using nikewax stuff is getting in the way of the gabba doing it's job. Wash the Nikewax off if you can. Then either tumble dry or iron on a low heat. That restores the Gabba's water resistance.
Most of Castelli's stuff is like this now rather than dwr. Much simpler and longer lasting.Bianchi Intenso Athena

Thanks for the advice guys, just re-washed the Gabba with nikwax tech wash as it was really dirty from yesterdays ride, I made sure the washing machine was completely clean, the conditioner / powder tray was clean, I put the machine on a 60 degree wash without anything in to clear any liquid conditioner in the wash. Once the gabba is dry, I might place a towel over it and iron on a low heat, hopefully this might restore the Gabba's water resistance.
Thanks.0 -

I think that actually they ARE the same material. Sportful own Castelli and both use the same Gore proprietary fabric.Coach H. (Dont ask me for training advice - 'It's not about the bike')0 -
Once the gabba is clean & dry, can I still tumble dry the jersey to see if it will restore the Gabba's water resistance?
Will it not damage or shrink the jersey?0 -
No, you''ll be fine on a low heat. Gore actually recommend it. I've used technical fabrics for almost twenty years and all I've used to wash them is pure soap flakes dissolved in hot water then poured into the washing machine. After that, just tumble dry.
Not sure, but sixty degrees may be too hot. Always washed mine at thirty or forty.
Edit:yup, sixty degree wash is too hot. Gore recommend forty.0 -
This all seems a bit complicated. I bought the Cervo Rosso Ibrido a while back (http://www.cervorosso.com/index.php?sec ... op&catId=4) and it just gets washed on a normal 40° wash (normal detergent, no softener) and it still beads and doesn't wet out in the rain. I have some techwash which I use at the end of each season on my ski gear so no doubt I'll use that once in a while if I notice any isseues with wetting out but until then it'll be in the wash with everything else.0

Are you on commission?
Might be worth having a word with your mates at Cervo Rosso because the design says ‘we wish we were Castelli’ and that logo font isn't the best...0 -
Nope, unfortunately not. I do get a discount (as do hundreds of others) through their 'Test Team' programme but I don't get a penny from recommending their gear. The shorts may be castelli-esque with the red knee gripper but the rest of the kit is nothing like the designs of Castelli that I've seen. Anyway the kit is good, the pads in their shorts are, in my opinion, better than another famous Swiss brand and as to the font, what is the 'best'?
Anyway back to the topic, the Ibrido is a an excellent piece of kit and isn't a PITA to care for!0
