Just got some new wheels and the rear hub cassette is very stiff to turn against the axle when you pedal. Any clues what I need to do to free it up .......... I doubt I have over tightened the cassette!

NovaTec A291/F482. Normally on my old off the shelf fulcrums this would be the locking nut ........... can't see one on these!0

WHen new, it's a bit stiff, tight seals on the bearings... but not to the point of being a problem... how stiff is stiff?left the forum March 20230

hand tight stiff. So if you back pedal ........... they won't turn. Grip the axle bit and try and turn the wheel and you need to be holding tight for it to turn.0

Was it fine before fitting the cassette?
If so you might have the wrong hub cap... the Campag and Shimano ones are differentleft the forum March 20230 -
Right I'll try that and I can't say before I fitted the cassette I didn't test it. Weirdly I had a Shimano fit locking nut. Despite the bike coming with a full campagnolo build. I only have a campag locking nut tool and I was scratching my head for a while wondering why it didn't quite fit ........... had to go to the lbs in the end to unlock/lock the cassette on!0

That's your problem then... if the lockring is too long it presses against the rubber seal inside the freehub resulting in dragleft the forum March 20230

Yep you were spot on. The thread was going to far into the housing and causing friction against the rubber housing. Swapped it for a shorter thread and all is OK.0
