Building a hardtail and fitting a 2 x chain ring with 10 x cassette. Those of you that have a similar set up, what is generally considered the best combination of ring/cassette sizes for cross country/trail. :?
Make that double :? :?

You are going to get a lot of varying recommendations.... I run a 27/39 up front on both my xc and trail bikes, trail bike has an 11/36 cassette, the xc a 11/34, getting up really steep stuff can be a struggle but as I get stronger it gets easier, I get plenty of top end speed on both bikes.0

Ratios need to suit you, not everyone is the same.
If you plan on fitting a bash guard don't buy a double specific crankset, you will need a triple.Transition Patrol - viewtopic.php?f=10017&t=130702350 -
Unless you plan on riding on the road or really really fast, then 11-36 with 38/24 is the most useful range of gears I think.A Flock of Birds

Remember, the size of the wheels makes a difference. Bigger wheels make for taller gearing so it matters if it is a 26 or 29". Like others have said, it is personal anyhow based on you and where you ride, but in case you are comparing, make sure you are comparing like with like.0

Cheers All. Gives me an idea. I'm running 26 wheels and wont be on the road much. Not that fit at the moment so I'm sure Ill have to put plenty of effort in.0

Chainrings don't really make too much of a difference, 24 and 3 or 38t is a reasonable choice. Get the 11-36t cassette0

I liked 28/42 with an 11-36 block.0

Be closer to 26/42 on 26" wheels.
But all this has shown is that it's subjective, as was originally said, and actually whilst I did like 28/42, I preferred a 36t single ring.0 -
I went from 24/32/42 to 24/36 now ended up with 1x10 with 34 & 11-36 cassette.0

38/26 with an 11-32 cassette. Plenty of useable combinations for a 29er.Specialized Roubaix Elite 2015
