Can the Boardman CX Team be beaten for the money?

I've got 10 days left to make up my mind (CTW deadline). I really love steel bikes (for comfort) but I'm struggling to find one that comes close to the Boardman for the money. In fact I haven't found a decent one with gears that comes in under a grand. I'm widening my horizons. Obviously I restricted by CTW rules. Any thoughts?

  • I take it that's a no then?
  • Of course it can the http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CBPXKAFF2T ... -road-bike has a better groupset, better brakes, is steel, is built by proper bike builders.

    What more do you need?

Seems to be quite good value too. If you're restricted to Halfords then yes, the Boardman is probably top of that pile.
  • I would still have the Boardy team CX over the PX bike, mine has been great as a winter miles eater check out the tread in the comuter section on the Boardy CX.

The main thing to look out for is the new 2014 models dont have full mudgard eylets, not sure if this has been resolved yet.

I have a 2013 CX Team and run it standars apart from wheels/tyres and full SKS guards. It is not ligh but rides ok even done 80+ miles road rides. With a tyre change you can ride along cycles paths etc as well. Great allrounder for the money

Is Tiagra better than Apex? These two bikes are on my list as well, cant decide between the two
  • My Kaffenback 2 came with Rival which is better than Apex and even though I like Sram, I have Red on another bike, I think Tiagra is smoother and quieter.

But even more important was the op's love for steel bikes and the Kaff 2 is steel.
  • Apex is lighter. And has handlebar cable routing. Better depends on if you prefer it.

As to the PX, carbon xls is lovely, if you don't want mudguards. But even the rose dx2000 in aluminium is lighter

if you are on the halfords cycle to work scheme thru your employer, the planetx are a no-go because you can't buy from them with a Halfords voucher

Do you know if you can change the groupset on the PX bikes? No option on the customise options
  • When I telephoned and asked them for an option not on the list but something they already sold they charged me the difference and upgraded it no problem. My upgrade was wheels but I would bet that they would upgrade anything providing you are willing to pay.

If you are planning on actually racing cyclocross then I wouldn't worry about steel comfort.

Running 33mm at mid 30s psi gives you much more compliance than any change in frame material would. My cross bike is cheap and cheerful as I accept there is a good chance / certainty I will crash it.
  • I race a 2014 CX comp... As you say its liable to be crashed so I went for cheap and cheerful!

    Are you on commission

I see the new Boardman range have Mavic xm319 rims with 700x35 tyres, whats the thinnest tyres you could safely put on these for summer use?

I've got 25mm vitorria road tyres on my 2014 CX team if that helps?
  • I've got 28mm gatorskins on mine... 85km without incident
