Attempting to "De-Boringify" My Black Domane

I love just about everything about my new Trek Domane, except for it's Darth Vader paint job... I feel it could use a little color. A frame repaint isn't something I can afford or am willing to do to a new bike, but some vinyl decals might do the trick... and have the added benefit that I can just peal them off when I want a change. My bike has a matte and gloss finish, so I'm inclined to think I should stick with only putting decals on the glossy sections so the decals adhere well.

With that in-mind, here's a concept I came-up with... what do you think?

I really like the look, but the next obvious problem is that coming-up with a concept in Photoshop is a lot easier than making the concept a reality :? In order to actually create vinyl stripes that fit like the photo, there would have to be some custom measurements taken and perhaps a lot of trial-and-error... I'm not sure if I'm up to that task or not. Anyone know of a decal shop that could make decals like this? (Wisconsin, USA preferred, but...)

Looks alright. Reminds me of something which I can't quite put my finger on......World champion rainbow colours?

Try asking Ezy_Rider, I'm sure he can get you some great decals.

Get an early 90's Trek I have two a 2300 and a 8900 MTB and the MTB in particular is colourful. Great bikes as well.

Leave as it is if want something interesting by an interesting frame to begin with.

    Looks great, Mr Costa.
    Red bikes are the fastest.

I have a Trek 5200 as well :D The only way to buy an *interesting* Domane was to either go up down to the 4 series or go up to the 6 series and spend thousands on "Project One" paint. In either case, I would've ended up spending way more than my bike cost, just for a look that I'll probably not care about in a few months... hence the attempt at using vinyl decals to get me where I want.

Yes, those are the World champion color stripes colors... I'm a *champion* in my little world! :P

When it is raining, the wind is blowing and I am gasping for breath whilst climbing a big hill in the gorgeous cotswolds, I don't spend too long thinking about adding UCI stripes to the frame of the bike I am riding...
  • I quite like the look of the black, but that's just me.

As said above, bar tape is a quick and easy way to all some colour. But what about tyres too? Get them in a colour to match the bar tape; personally I'd go with red, but you have a blank canvas.

So to understand, you bought a new bike in black and now are bored of the colour scheme? Why not buy a coloured bike to begin with?

  • Because Trek bikes are usually only available in one (or two) colours per specification. Presumably he bought based on speficiation not colour.

Just another reason to hate Trek bikes.

IME most manufacturers are the same.
  • Has anyone suggested removing the stem topcap and fitting a new frame?

I'd second the suggestion to go for coloured saddle and bar tape. Maybe even matching coloured tyres if you want to brighten the whole thing up a bit. Would look a lot better than some random stickers. And you won't be risking abuse from those who think you shouldn't use world champ colours if you aren't actually world champ.

Its your bike - put rainbows on it - just dont ask others what they think.

Put pink unicorns on it for all I care.

I think the real problem is that you're looking at the bike too much. Ride more - then you'll have less time to look at it.

Well, it's been about 10 degrees Fahrenheit for the past week or so, giving me ample time to stare at my bike instead of ride it

Your other option of course is the stealth bike project but you probably don't want to go that route.

Yeah... it's not that I don't like how my black bike looks, it's that it looks like everyone else's black bike. Heck... as I type this, the advertisement in the background is "Enter to win a BikeRadar dream bike" which is a solid black Cervelo. :?

But why would you care about the opinions and abuse from the sort of people who get into a hissy fit whenever they see world champions colours anywhere other than on or about a world champion? They'll get annoyed about all sorts of stuff that isn't anything to do with them anyway so it really isn't worth worrying about.

To the OP - looks like a good way to de-boringify a frame to me. Doubt it would cost much to get some transfers made up.
