Hi guys, and a Merry Christmas to you all :D

I've just got a Giant Defy 4 (2014) and have a question regarding the fork. Its a composite fork with alloy steerer.
On the inside of the fork about 2 inches up from the dropouts (on both sides) there are metallic spots showing where there is no paint, is this normal and if so what are they?

Thanks in advance....

    Hi beski,

Just had a look at the fork on my bike and can't see the spots you describe, my bike is a 2013 model however, so it may be something specific to 2014 model variants. Looks like a trip back to the bike shop to get their opinion/satisfy your curiosity.

    Hi DJ,

Thanks for the response, I don't think it's anything untoward (hopefully) because they are uniform in position on both sides but seems a bit strange.

Regarding the gearing we talked about in previous posts, I've had one ride so far & the compact gearing seems adequate, haven't negotiated any monster hills yet though, it's all still a learning process

    Happy new year beski.

If you do find out what those spots are post and lets us know. Enjoy your new bike and go and find some steep hills to climb, you know you want to really. :D

    Hi DJ, Happy New Year.

They are drainage holes, don't know why they don't appear on other Defy models, nor did the guys in the shop. One of the 'drainage holes' is covered with a silver metal looking residue (maybe paint of some description) so doesn't look like a hole. I could try & dig it out with a matchstick or something but seeing as riding in torrential rain (& bloody wind!) isn't something I plan on doing if i can help it I havn't bothered yet, will maybe ask about it when it goes in for first service.

Probably just me being anal :D I showed the missus & she couldn't see what I was fussing about :D

Did a steep hill the other day, puffed & chugged up OK :D Christmas diet hasn't help fitness levels, thing I notice is, it doesn't get easier you just get quicker
