Do you think doing that amount of climbing helps you become a fitter cyclist or does it actually start to get in the way? Serious question (I realise it could be read the wrong way) .. I ask as I'm pondering what to do next year .. carry on having climbing as a big part of my routes or try and mix in more flatter, longer routes too. It's just the hills do tend to wear me out somewhat (funny that) - which means I spend a far few days on recovery rides or not riding.
Unfortunately my aims for 2014 are quite far apart - want to be able to do 10 mile TTs but also train my body to be "comfortable" with 100m+ rides (I've done a few).
Just wondering ..0 -

+1
I love riding where I am because of this. Better to do 20 miles of up and down with awesome scenery then grinding out 50 or 100 miles on the flat. Maybe that's what I need to keep in perspective for 2014 - forget the mileage and love the ride 8)0 -

4923 miles

Happy with that0 -
85 feet per mile, 768077 feet in 9026.5 miles.0

I like hills I thought mine might be better. Oh well, 6225 miles 379,488 about 61 fpm.0

There must be more hills in Birmingham then I thought lol
I live in Solihull and have done 4,653 miles and 194,426ft so far this year which gives 41.8ft/mile. A couple of hilly rides in Sheffield and S Wales this year but a trip over to Clent recently saw 4300ft over 42 miles so - yes Birmingham and its surroundings are fairly hilly0 -

Flat? Have you seen Swain's Lane? Or Muswell Hill? Or Highgate Hill? Or Highgate West Hill?
The local circuit here has 570m of climbing in 25km (http://www.strava.com/activities/99021781)0 -
Crap year, only 2,179 miles and 54,485'. Most of my riding has been a pan flat commute so 25' per mile which is ridiculously low for South Wales!0

52 In Devon.
I was looking for a 16mph average, and 3000 miles, but Dartmoor put paid to the first, but did up the climb rate from 41 in the 1st half of the year, but dropped the average speed from 16.2 to 15.4.
Still got 29 miles to go, but got a knee problem. May have to find a 29 mile downhill quickly!0 -

6933 miles and 252,500 ft of elevation so 36.4 ft per mile riding in Northants/Leics/Warks/Lincs and Cambs0

Only just started again on Strava in September so may be skewed..
30240ftclimbed
480miles
63ft per mile.
Lancashire.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but this all doesn't really mean much anyway because the mileage also includes down hills. ??????0 -

It's just a bit of fun / interesting comparison and if you assume most rides start and finish at the same point then it is a meaningful comparison.0 -
3682 mile
253255 ft climbed
246hr 48mins
so that means 68.78 ft per mile
and a average speed of 14.92mph
happy with that i live in north Manchester, (Middleton) so have a mix of flat and hilly routes but tend to head into the hills as the flat bores me0 -
For me, 45ft per mile for the rides with my Garmin turned on. I'd guess the overall average would be lower.0
-
My stats for the year are
Distance 4,899.3 mi
Time 300h 26m
Elev Gain 340,318 ft
Which works out at 16.3mph average & 69.5 ft per mile, this is my first year riding a road bike so happy with that.
I live in NW Leeds so its quite hilly round here, you struggle to get a flat ride unless you head out east of leeds.
I'm now on the final push to get 5000 miles for the year!0 -
Mine is 34 ft per mile, mainly in east Kent which is generally flat and a few rolling hills. My figures includes turbo sessions and quite a few laps of the local country park tarmacced circuit which is pretty flat. Even without these I reckon the figure would only rise by a couple of feet or so.0
-
My figures:
Distance - 9,657 miles
Elevation gain - 437,707 ft
45 ft per mile - I live in Herts and commute regularly into Central London (there and back)
Had wanted to get to 10,000 for the year, doesn't seem likely now0 -
1905 miles, 51 ft per mile, East Hants and West Sussex.0
-
3159 miles
190,069 ft ascent
= 60.2 ft/mile0 -
I think that's 60.2! Otherwise you have spent all year cycling up hills averaging a 1 in 9 gradient which is impressive!0
-
Hmmm
Just over a 1000 miles and just under 95000 feet so it works out at 88.8 feet per mile. I guess the edge of the Pennines does make it a bit hilly. My short little trip out can often be up Holme Moss and back in about 15 miles. It's not that I like climbing hills, it's just that I really like going down them and the only way you can do that is to et to the top in the first place.0 -
Isle of Man
Miles 4177
Feet 148714
Ft per Mile 57.30 -
27ft/mile but I can't trust the elevation figures with Garmin/Strava. I've been on rides where mine is 2000ft and my ride partners have varied from 2500-3500ft on exactly the same routes.0

This is an interesting stat that I hadnt considered before.
I have 76 feet of climbing per mile in 2013, in the West Pennine Moors.0
