So I had my chain and cassette changed at the LBS and when I got home I noticed it had one link a different colour like a more gold colour which stands out.
I can only presume it was too short out the box.
Does this warrant going back guys looks a bit odd but is functional

  • What kind of chain is it?

Are you sure it's not a quick link/missing link that let's you join and unjoin the chain easily?
  • Most likely a KMC quick link. I prefer the gold ones as they are easier to see when you want to take the chain off for cleaning.
  • I'd be really surprised if a chains was too short out of the box . It must be a quicklink that you're seeing. I'm also surprised that people still get a LBS to do this type of work; why not learn how your bike works by maintaining and servicing it yourself!
  • Ill take another look but its a SRAM chain which apparently is compatible with the Shimano HG50 cassette. I never really asked just noticed it looked odd.

Regarding maintenance they don't really charge much when buying the parts from them, something like £6quid so easier to get them to do it when my 2 days a week are consumed with looking after my son and the other 5 are working. I barely have enough time to ride :-(

I kind of see your point but it must be quicker to do it yourself than take it the shop and have to pick it up?

  • If it's a SRAM chain it could be the powerlink that is a different colour. These are not quick release links...better swap it for a KMC quicklink, makes removing the chain much easier.

    Whats a powerlink then?
  • Sorry, should have said power lock. These are not intended to be re- used on SRAM 10 and 11 speed chain, which is why I always swap them fir a KMC quicklink.

KMC isn't reusable on 11-speed either.
