New bike advice

Hi,
Sorry, I'm sure this gets asked a lot but I am looking for some advice on a new bike. I've been cycling a lot around London over the last few years on a very old bike but it breaks down too much and cannot be relied on, so it's time to buy a new one.
I will mostly use for commuting but would like to have something that is capable of long rides and can take some weight attached if needed. I don't have a huge budget - ideally sub-£500 but would rather spend more if it meant more longevity/less need to upgrade or service later on.
Any advice or recommendations much appreciated!
Thanks
