mudguards!

i'd never bothered with them but fitted some yesterday and the pretty horrible (infact epically horrible!!) conditions yesterday and today did not dampen my spirit (very intentional pun!!) too much!

yeah, they aren't going to add anything in the looks department but as long as I have a dry 4rse I'll be happy enough!!

did a sportive a couple of weeks ago, out of over 100 riders there were only about 10 with guards fitted, couldn't believe it!

it had been raining constantly since the night before so it wasn't like the rain was unexpected!

ended up riding the whole route on my own to avoid getting sprayed in the fave the whole ride.
  • I spent a good chunk of Saturday's club ride answering questions about my rear mudguard. No, it isn't supposed to be that shape. No, it isn't broken. Well it is, but it's been taped up. No, I don't need to take it off and mend it by drilling new holes and joining with a cable tie. Yes, it does still do its job, rather better than most other people's in fact.

I can understand why people were curious, except I've ridden hundreds of miles with these guys since the mudguard took its current form and no one has noticed until now.

Mudguards are great though and seem to have become more widespread in my club, perhaps because the influence of ex-racer hard men has been diluted by newer members to whom not covering following riders in crap seems like common courtesy.

I'll bet - did it by any chance include riding along a country lane past a farm post daily milking ?

Agreed, I was a bike tart but have come to stick full guards on both my geared and SS bike. It saves my ass and all importantly my shoes from a real soaking.

Getting home dry in those areas beats how sexy my bike looks for a few months.

Did the Wymondham 50 a couple of weeks ago. Cloudburst after 20 miles. Had to wring socks out twice despite having full Chromoplastics. I was however a bit drier and a lot cleaner than my two companions without guards; they looked like they just done a muddy cyclocross event :D
