X4 Rear Derailleur Upgrade

I've got a Specialized Hardrock Sport (2010) which uses a SRAM x4 rear derailleur in a 3 x 8 system that has unfortunately now broken.
What are my upgrade options? I've read that I could swap it straight out for an x7 9 speed derailleur, is that correct?
Ideally I'd like to do it as a straight swap initially, but also to give me the potential to change the rest of the groupset to 9 speed.

8 and 9 speed are interchangeable, so any SRAM Xx (where x is a number) SRAM for 8 or 9 speed will work fine now and with 9 speed.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
