Freehub replacement headache.

My freehub started spin both ways freely so obviously required replacing...firstly it was a pain to get off as all the guides online said all I needed was a 10mm allen key, took it to Halfords who told me it required a 12mm allen key, but they don't sell them (got one on the way from Chainreaction) - and they don't stock freehubs anyway. They undid the bolt inside the hub (it undoes from the left (non-chain) side and the 12mm bolt is still captured inside the hub itself. After some persuasion with a hammer I managed to get the freehub off and now I am having trouble identifying what replacement I need.

I was hoping it would be a standard Shimano part and it'd have a part number on it :) No such luck. After poring over the techdocs on the Shimano website I couldn't find a part that looks similar as it seems Shimano freehubs have teeth inside the freehub rather than protruding out of the freehub like mine has.

So...

1. Does anyone know what I should order to replace this part? It came from a Kore hub, but their site doesn't appear to have pictures to help me out.

2. Should I just get rid of the whole hub assembly and buy a Shimano item like this? Would a moron like me be able to take the old wheel apart and put the new hub in, install all the screws but then get my LBS to make the wheel true?

Thanks for your help :D

They do. In the car section - 3/8" drive 12mm allen head oil drain key, £4.99:

    1. Look on the Kore website for info as that is the maker, not Shimano (unless of course they use Shimano ones, but the website will tell all)

    2. NO. TBH, I'd consdier a new wheel before a rebuild, depending on the quality of the wheel.

Thanks for the heads-up, they told me there they didn't have one. Oh well.

    1. Their website didn't appear to have pictures as far as I could see.

    2. So if I was to buy this wheel set and this disc could I just pop my cassette and tyre and inner tube on and start riding? I have a 9 speed cassette already. Would that disc (provided I buy the right size) work with my Avid Juicy 5 calipers?

It's not long enough to catch... Well at least that's my experience of them.

I don't recognise that FHB, could be available but after a quick google you'll seem to be out of luck.

Wheelset will be fine, it should fit dependant on size of disc you already have. Failing that you could just use a centrelock adaptor and use existing disc.

Cheers, Chief. I just ordered the wheels and the adaptor.

Halfords staff with no product knowledge? Who would've thought it?...

To be fair, I've not tried mine on a freehub specifically, I use it mainly for the front wheel spindle on my StripleR, so I don't know if it's long enough for that specifically.
