Anyone seen a Garmin Edge 500 with HR and cadence cheaper than the £176 here:
http://www.handtec.co.uk/garmin-edge-500-heart-rate-monitor-speed-cadence-red-black-010-00829-13.html
I'm really only after a HR monitor, but figure that if I'm going to spend on one of those then I might as well go "full lyrca" and get the Garmin, and get premium Strava membership...
Or should I consider any cheaper alternatives?

Buy an edge 800. Great tool on the roadie.0

Edge 500 is more than enough in my opinion, had one since they first came out a few years ago and still going strong. Can be used for directions ( not full map on screen) but rather a trail line and can include cue card etc. I use for both on & off road and works very well as long as common sense prevails as with any navigation device.

Yeah, this is what I'm thinking. Cheers.0 -
I have an Edge 800 and its a great bit of kit but if I was buying again now I would buy the Edge 500 or 510 and save some money as I don't really use the full mapping on the 800.0

I got the 500 bundle from handtec Cpl weeks ago and Im very happy with it.I had the 200 and for me the upgrade was worth it.Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori0

Not sure Strava premium membership is worth it, may be if you have a power meter.0

Great buy!
i got exactly the same. bought from wiggle at about same price through platinum discount . tried it on a 65 mile run, great stuff. then again on my first century (planned the route and followed the device) not a sat nav as such but easy to read. very accurate, great looking, great fit, resale value? prob get your full money back, lol. so much info when hooked up to pc, easy to understand too. oh and power seems to be great, had mine on route display for 6hrs on my 103 mile trip, used approx20% of battery.
buy it. you will be pleased0 -

my 500 is my first proper GPS cycling comp and its awesome, fitted it in 30 seconds, and it is literally turn it on and go, mine picks up satellites straight away, I use the lap function to time every 5 miles so I know where I'm at, also got the HR and cadence, the cadence is probably a bit overkill, but am liking seeing my HR on climbs etc........so yeah, you should buy one.
Also did I read a few posts up that the 500 can work as a map-like tool, like for route planning???0 -
How does the forum feel about the Edge 500 vs something like eTrex 30, which you can get for about the same amount and can display full colour maps?- - - - - - - - - -

Does the etrex do anything other than navigate? If so its not really worth comparing?Trainer Road Blog: https://hitthesweetspot.home.blog/

I've been using the "follow course" feature a bit recently to venture further afield and it's surprisingly good - create the route on ridewithgps, saved as a tcx file and keep an eye on the course map for upcoming turns.
It gives the "off course" message quite often when it looses gps signal or when the route makes a mess of bike paths, junctions etc, and the turn beep happens a bit late for my liking but overall it works.0 -
It'll do the ANT+ stuff I believe, does all the basic cycle computer stuff too (avg. speed, peak speed, moving time, total ET etc. etc.). It doesn't really do turn-by-turn but it will show you a live map with your location and your route overlaid.- - - - - - - - - -

I bought the Edge 500 HR and cadence bundle from Handtec a couple of weeks ago. Great little computer.
The off course msgs are a bit annoying but apparently if you use GPSies.com to create a track and on the EXPORT tab click 'set points evenly' and this will help with the problem.
I have not tried this yet as I've only read about it this evening, but will give it a go.0 -
Have a look at Bryton as well, their devices do the same as Garmin but are cheaper.
I have a Bryton Rider 40 with HRM that I picked up for £100, I then bought a Garmin speed/cadence sensor for £26 online so £126 for everything.0 -
Mio 305 HC kit from Halfords for £145 (if you use the British cycling discount code) seems a no brainer.0
-
That Bryton and Mio are diefinite bargains. I in the end went for the Garmin 800, which is great. But if I were to buy again I would not get it, the extra cash isn't worth it.0
