Just wondered about bike insurance as I'm about to spend my first thousand on a bike and can't afford to watch it disappear if something unfortunate happened. Who do people recommend and why please?

Not had any experience with this before

Use the search. Insurance comes up weekly.

Worth joining British Cycling for the 3rd party insurance - I think they do bike insurance as well, I haven't tried it so can't recommend, but it is where I would start.
  • You should be able to cover your bike under your Household policy but you will often need to specify it if it's worth over a certain amount (£500?). You'll be covered for most accidental damage* except that caused during 'racing'. I assume this is why all sportives make it clear that they are not races.

    * Just check what counts as accidental damage in the definition.
  • I agree with Norfolk, my bike is a specified item on house insurance and its covered both at home and away, I recommend the British cycling for 3rd party insurance too, I have "ride" cover which seems great value.

Direct line cover bikes in the garage to a value of up to £1,000.

If the bike is stored in the house they core them up to any value as it. Comes under normal content.

Depending on the value you might want to take out special bike insurance to protector against theft or damage when you are using it. This can be very expensive though and I was quoted over £650 for my bike.

Plus one for direct line. One of my bikes is worth more than £1000 so it is insured as an individual item for a relatively small additional fee and this covers theft outside and abroad (provided that reasonable precautions are made)

  • As someone who has recently had to claim for accidental damage to my bike away from home, on my home insurance policy, be wary. They are not specialists and make sure you get a copy of their policy wording before you sign on the dotted line. Read it and make sure you fully understand the implications before you commit.

You've guessed it, my experience was bad and it took over a month and a lot of ball ache to reach settlement.
