Hi,

i've been planning on buying a new Wilier GTR Ultegra 6800 when it's available. It will be priced at £2199

http://www.wilier.it/it/catalogo/road-bike/gtr/

but the Veloce model will be priced at £1499 - thats a £700 difference for what appears to be maybe a couple hundred pounds extra gear.

groupset wise its only the shifters, derailiuers and cassette that change between the 2 models.

is the ultegra model good value?

thanks.

**EDITED - didn't mean to imply that wilier were ripping people off - thanks Calpol**

Not sure rip off is the correct terminology. You are paying more for 11 speed. Whether or not it is good value to do so is perhaps questionable. I run Veloce and its absolutely fine. I doubt I would pay £700 more for 11 speed ultegra - in fact i know I wouldn't because I don't like Shimano.

Ultegra is far superior to Veloce so I would go for that.

I don't think the whole bike package is almost 50% better with 11 speed Ultegra. I'd go with Veloce. As 11 speed is "new" you pay a massive premium for it.

You can buy the complete group set for £619.00 (I did) from merlin cycles, if you can afford it but the group set and cheaper bike. Swap over the group set and sell the new unused set, that's what I would do.

    Pinarello GAN
  • Or even better, do the same but with Campagnolo Athena from Ribble for £550-£700 depending on spec

Thanks Markjaspi... that does seem to be a good option - its what made me really question the pricing structure in the first place to be honest.

i've been a bit bored waiting for this bike to be launched so i started looking at building a bike, pricing parts etc, then i came to realise that the difference in price just doesn't add up, especially as half the groupset is the FSA gear which is spec'd on each model.
  • If you are set on Shimano - the 11 speed Ultegra is £620 on Ribble.

Don't forget that if you buy the Veloce equipped bike, you would need to change the wheels/rear hub to be Shimano compatible.

    thanks for your input everybody.

Does anyone have any experience with the FSA crank set? i'm reading a few comments around the web and generally people don't seem that impressed (wished they'd gone full shimano). i only have experience with my sora to compare it with in terms of feel once i finally get a test ride; if anyone with experience of the FSA gossamer crankset and ulterga could give an opinion, that would be good.

    thanks.

btw - i'm thinking shimano because i already have wheels / tools that are shimano compat and i don't really want the expense of replacing them if i switch to campag. :D

if thats your bike in the signature (Triban 5) then moving to a Wilier is going to be a pretty big step up. FSA cranks are fine. You won't notice any difference. By all means stick with Shimano but as I said before it isnt worth an incremental £700. It won't make it any lighter or faster. With regard your wheels (agian if they are the Fulcrum 5s in your sig) they won't be much better than the stock Wilier/Fulcrum wheels on the Veloce bike. For the £700 you could get a second set, say for summer use - some nice 50mm carbon tubs for example.

if your heart is set on Ultegra then for goodness sake do as one of the other respondents suggested and buy the groupo from ribble, swap it with the Veloce and sell the Veloce for £300 ish.

Remember you will have to swap your rear campag free hub for a shimano free hub as the Fulcrums the Veloce spec bike will come with will have a campag free hub. It is worth looking at the cost of this part as they can be around £60, unless you find one in a deal somewhere.

You will like the GTR. I've had a Gran Turismo since January 2011 and it is being changed for a Cento 1 SR. The GT is a very nice bike, stiff and responsive. Mine was full Campagnolo 11 speed Athena, no FSA bits at all and Fulcrum 3 wheels. I've sold all my Athena and will be using 11 speed Chorus on the new frame with a set of Mavic Ksyrium SLR's. The Fulcrum 3's are now on my winter bike.
