Upgrade wheels or replacement?

Hi all,

I went out a few days ago on holiday and had to return very quickly as I suddenly lost all drive in my rear wheel. After a inspection at the LBS (in France) they explained in their best possible english that the hub had broken on my wheel. Currently I have Shimano WH-R500 wheelset and they quoted more for the repair than it costs for a new rear wheel. For the use they have had I'm rather disappointed and don't really want to settle for the same again.

Therefore I am looking to seize the opportunity to upgrade from these 'budget' wheels. Anybody have any good upgrade advice and possible candidates for somebody who isn't looking to spend all that much. Even if I have to look to auction sites for them at a cut price I would be happy.

These retail around 80 pounds for the pair, if I remember correctly... you can't expect too much at that price point... they probably did their honest job while they lasted

Define not spending too much. If your budget is £120 or so get Miche Reflex wheels. Not light at 2063g (weighted on my scales) but they are at least relaible.

I have a set of those on my tourer and they've been great, it's not often you hear of failures like that.

I got a used set last year for 110 on ebay to fit my Cannondale and they spin up wonderfully.

I would say no more than £250, the ultegra's look very appealing.

I think he's trying to ascertain if you can get away with light wheels or are a tad more portly and need somewhat more substantial hoops.

Ah didn't want to jump to that conclusion myself.

I would like to consider myself lightweight. 5'11" and 11.5 stone
