Windproof and a race cape IME. During the Winter months I rarely wear my full on waterproof jacket as it tends to be dry and cold around these parts. I usually go for a merino base layer and my trusty softshell, with a race cape folded in my back pocket, for unexpected downpours (IIRC - used once in freak snow/sleet blizzard).
You're in Scotland though, aren't you? I would go for something to suit local conditions. If it's predominantly wet then I'd go for a quality waterproof and just layer up, as you said. If it's dry, then go for a softshell.“Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”0 -
no east yorkshire, a race cape and a windproof makes some sense, i had looked at some merino winter baselayers that looked the business!enigma esprit

I've not found any shell waterproof that will stay dry inside when working hard - you have to accept you're going to get damp from the inside or out. Of far more use will be a Windstopper jacket that keeps you warm; has a high degree of water resistance but you won't boil in the bag and get cold. IME Gore fabrics for the best in terms of durability and performance, so look at Gore Bikewear, Castelli, Sportful or Exte Ondo. Assos and Rapha use fabrics that aren't as durable IME.
Again, if riding hard IME, Merino holds too much moisture, gets damp and chills - although stinky, synthetics are better at wicking.Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0 -
i suppose people find what they like, thining about it if i was wearing windproof i probably wouldnt need the warmth of a winter base layer. jacket wse i currently have a mavic espoir jacket which doesnt seem at all waterproof, in autumn/spring temps its alight as an extra layer butlooking for something overall better. will have a look at gore....dont know if i wil be able to resist rapha though if something turns up in the sale!enigma esprit

I have a Gore Path jacket that's 100% waterproof and pretty breathable. This I wear with appropriate layers if it's pi$$ing down or likely to do so during a ride.
However from autumn through to spring the jacket I wear 90% of the time is my Gore Phantom softshell. The windstopper fabric does what it says on the tin, is showerproof and warm yet is extremely breathable. The added bonus is that the sleeves zip off leaving you with a decent gilet.0 -

Don't judge all Mavic stuff based on your experience of the Espoir. Their higher end stuff is much much better. I have two Mavic softshells and a HC H2O Goretex jacket, they are all excellent and I've never had a ride spoiled by any of them letting me down. IIRC Monty Dog, in another thread, mentioned that the Mavic gloves (possibly overshoes too) were pi55 poor in terms of quality but I've never had an issue with the jackets. I wouldn't buy the gloves though, based on what Monty had posted on that thread.
I really want to get the Rapha wind jacket, in orange but it's out of stock and a bit too expensive for me. Will buy some new Mavic kit while the sales are on“Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”0 -

The Equipe and Echapee softshells are worth a look. IME they are very good indeed.“Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”0 -
I'm basing my knowledge of Mavic kit on my buddy who's VP of the company that owns Mavic and watched his kit fall apart on a succession of rides - it was quite comicalMake mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

For what it's worth I have a Mavic Echappee windproof jacket and Ive found it fantastic. Good in a light shower too. Also have a HC H20 in Goretex paclite and that's been good in heavy rain.Titus Silk Road Ti rigid 29er - Scott Solace 10 disc - Kinesis Crosslight Pro6 disc - Scott CR1 SL - Pinnacle Arkose X 650b - Pinnacle Arkose singlespeed - Specialized Singlecross...& an Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray 4 string...0

^This. Gore Bike wear Path and Phantom covers all eventualities. The Path is reasonably light and packs away into a rear pocket pretty easily too.0
