Hi all...
Here's a snippet from the email i've just sent to my folks... sums up where i'm at and why i'm asking.
Well, it's not a perfect cross between the two types. Mine's too much like a mountain bike. Under geared which means i have to pedal like the clappers to get anywhere swiftly. Also, the sit up riding position isn't very aerodynamic and the big tyres cause lots of drag.
But... it's a bloody gorgeous bike though! I'm REALLY enjoying it. It's great on grass, gravel and general hooning about and stuff. From what I read too i'm following a very well trodden path. Return to cycling after many years, buy a modern hybrid, get fitter, buy a road bike
Was thinking of fitting drops to the Carrera Subway Ltd. Ed. Now i've finally got the stem high enough (not really high, just level with the saddle but I needed a steering tube extender to do it!) 1st thing i though was drops. Then skinny slicks. Give it longer legs with new gearing... "Bugger! I sound like a chap that needs a road bike." I thought!
I've loved getting back into cycling on the Subway. In many ways it's the perfect route back in as i could be now looking for a full suspension downhiller or somesuch. But it's a road bike i'm after. Would like to stay with Carerra but there's quite a choice at the mo.
There's the TDF, Virtuoso and the Vanquish is right at the limit of what I can afford. I'm six foot, 13 / 14 stone and commute to work daily (takes about 20 mins each way) but I can see much more weekend riding with a road bike. So I guess i'm asking what would you plump for and is it worth waiting untill the Autumn as I hear Halfords have all kinds of reductions just before winter sets in....
I don't know enough yet to confidently buy second hand although i have been looking at ebay collection only just in case something leaps out at me. And maybe i'm shooting myself in the foot by limiting myself to one make? I mean the low end Boardman comes in at the same price as the Vanquish.
Oh! And thanks you lot... you guys were right about the Subway! Having lots of fun and loving the thing.
