I'm not really sure if this is a stupid bike question or not but here goes. If i just buy the Sram Red crankset will i need to change my gears to Sram or can i still have my ultegra gearing?

They are interchangeable, Shimano, SRAM and FSA as far as you are concerned, since the spacing is the same.

I would guess you do need to use the same shifters and mechs mind you.

    sram/shimano chainsets are interchangeable

tbh front mechs are so simple/brutal, pretty much anything will work as long as the chain can't drop between the rings

Buddy rides a Chorus Ultratorque crank with DA 7800 shifters and Force front der. Works a treat.

as sungod says, you cannot get more simple with a front mech, they are binary - on/off, small/large, etc.

set your limit screws, height and angle (the hardest to get right) carefully and you're done.

I have a SRAM RED Quarq 22 with my Campagnolo Chorus 11 setup, works better than the Campagnolo Crankset.

If your frame uses an eternal BB you'll need to change to a SRAM bottom bracket too as the spacing is different, but the gears will work fine. Buy a decent BB though as the standard GXP ones are crap.

What BB would you recommend with Sram??
