Is it OK to mix top and bottom headset cups from different headsets together?

I currently have a zero stack (ZS44) type headset in my frame which take a normal 9/8inch steerer.

Reading the Cane Creek website I can use a External bottom cup (EC44) to enable me to use a tapered steer fork in the same frame.

To save money can I simply get just get a bottom cup and keep the existing top cup (FSA ZS4)?

I can't see anything wrong with this but thought I'd check here first.

thanks in advance.

you can use complete halves from any headset. the problems start when you want to mix parts in an assembly.
