Hi,
I have XC bike and I've never ridden on any road bike before only XC type bikes [so far]. But because I do a lot of road rides so I though I need second bike for winter/autumn for days when I do not want go dirty but simply go for a ride around town. And thats why for last few weeks I started thinking about second bike, Ha, and here is problem because I can't decide where I should go, as I said never ride any road bike , that's why hybrid [like boardman comp ] looks like bike where my position is similar to this on my XC, tyres look like those in road bike [28's] and handlebar is straight! ,I read a loads articles and people reviews and opinion and that made my confused even more!
So to all of you guys question...what do you think ? I do not want ride for 60miles each ride ,more like 20-30 and even more often 10-15 [weekdays ]+ Commuting . I do not want be a pro road cyclist.but enjoy every mile on bike.
So two biggest arguments against road bike for now are - handlebar, and that characteristic body position + no experience.
thankss

Budget, rough location (ie is your ride likely to be really flat), will you be putting a rack on it?Life isnt like a box of chocolates, its like a bag of pic n mix.0

Im looking to spend around £300 for 2nd hand bike or something like triban 3 [ £300 new ] , I live in Kent, roads ain't too bad. here. I didn't think about rack.0

If you are really just using it as a commuter and leisure bike I would say stick with a hybrid or even just a mtb with road tyres. If you want to be a bit quicker and like the idea of a road bike (takes a little getting used too but worth it in the long run) look at a second hand allez or similarLife isnt like a box of chocolates, its like a bag of pic n mix.0

If you decide to throw some more money at it then I'd say a Genesis Equilbrium (would be my choice), CDF or Revolution cross bike. Otherwise trawl e-bay & local papers and see whats out there - Dawes tourer maybe?
If a commuter you'll probably want a bike that takes full mudgurds & a maybe a rack for the daily grind.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0 -
interesting thread. I'm pretty much in the same boat as you in wanting to get that second bike. I am interested in getting something though that will be nice to cover some distance on. I'm no where near it yet but would love to be able to do 100 mile a day kind of rides. I'm planning on building mine though, and if you have the time and the know how (it's not that hard) I would recommend you do the same. Buy some second hand parts and for £300, from the research I've been doing today, you could be able to put something together that could be costing maybe £800 new! I'm just trying to find the right frame at the moment, but components and so on seem like they shouldn't be a problem - I did the same with my mtb which cost about £350 in the end. New bikes with the same spec cost quite a bit over £1000!0

I just made the switch from a hybrid to a road bike and its been surprisingly easy - although I had to develop some confidence on the hybrid first.
I also really wanted a road bike all along. But I would not say the transition is hard so long as you're realistic about it (i.e. body may take a couple of rides to adapt). In the long run I feel a lot more 'solid' on my road bike than a flat-bar now.0 -
I use a Giant Roam sports hybrid for commuting and definitely recommend it, very fast for a hybrid bike despite the front suspension.0
