about to push the button on a Garmin and got a couple of questions i need answering
i only really need it to navigate me around on rides.. as i currently use my iphone but it doesnt do turn by turn navi
but guessing if i do buy il be using the garmin for all my rides and leaving the phone in my pocket. i know a couple of my friends are in a position where their 605 and 705 both wont work when plugging into their pc due to the socket issues. is this now solved on the 510 or 810s??
so if i buy an 810 is it over the top, or is the navigation that much better than the breadcrumb trail on the 500
also do i need to buy maps for it at £100 or is open source mapping really good enough,,
or can i use a friends copy of maps he bought
should i spend the extra and get speed cadence HRM at the start or get the extras when i need them..
cheers

I have had no upload issues with my 510. Seeing as you have an iPhone you can connect the 510/810 to it via bluetooth and it will upload automatically when you save the ride, so even if you experience an issue you could still upload your rides.
If you cant afford the extra for HRM and cadence I personally would, its something I regret not getting with my 510. sorry I cant help with my navigation question.0 -
Buy the bundle it's worth it. Most issues with Garmin devices are down to user error. If your friends are using Windows systems then there is sometimes an issue detecting the device. This isn't the Garmin but the PC. I had a similar issue when I bought an 810 and tried to connect it to an older PC with Windows. No such problem on my Mac or newer PCs.
The mapping is far better than the bread crumb trail and it will work with OS mapping. The LiveTracking feature is very useful allowing partners or even ride buddies to track you on a PC during your ride. My wife is able to see I'm still moving and haven't been knocked off by some wanker in a silver BMW, and also has the garage open and a recovery drink ready for my return.
Any phone with Bluetooth will connect to it so it isn't necessary to have an iPhone.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0 -
If you are going to get hrm/cadence, by a bundle - it is noticeably cheaper.Giant Defy 2

I agree...buy the bundle. You'll want all the sensors as soon as anyway once you see how you can customise your screen. The bluetooth connection with the phone app is the key USP in my opinion. It makes it so much more convenient, I've only ever plugged it into my laptop to do a firmware upgrade, that's it.
The routing can be a bit tricky to figure out, the instructions are brief and not the clearest, so you may find that it tries to recalculate a route that you've transferred across to it, just pay attention to the configuration settings and you should be ok.
Having come from a Bryton Rider 50 about 6 months ago I think the Edge is good for convenience but the Bryton is better for actual navigation and is a little more robust - the Edge has frozen a couple of times, once when saving a 50 mile Spanish Sierra Nevada mountain activity...needless to say I lost ALL the data and nearly ditched the Edge there and then!0 -
what about maps,, did you guys buy the maps also?? or use open source maps for free??
cant see my wife being ready with a recovery shake and the garage door open.!!!! but i guess i could bribe the oldest son.. lolSpecialized S Works SL2 . Campagnolo Record 11spd. rolling on Campag Zonda wheels

Maps are a choice only you can make. The OSM are absolutely fine, but there's something about OS mapping. If you want OS, then again the cheapest way is a bundle including it. IIRC when I bought mine the OS cost about £50 extra, but ere ££££ separate.
TBH I'm not convinced the small screen does OS justice.

so just to confirm does anyone know if the connection socket waterproof issue has now been resolved ??

If you tell the Garmin to put the logs and routes on the sdcard then if the USB socket plays up you can just take the sdcard out and put it in a card reader.0

The cover issue is more than likely down to misuse/handling. In any case, a small dab of silicon would sort the issue. I bought the Euro map download on to an SD card. Other forms of mapping work but I'm confident everything should work having used the genuine product. I never had a problem with my 705 mapping and none with the 810.I ride a bike.
