Following a course on a Garmin 810?

I've had my unit for 4 weeks now and really can't understand how best to follow a course.

I specifically got the unit as I wanted to explore new areas around my house. I create routes on Garmin Connect and upload them, and all is ok.

However if I go off course, I've set it to prompt to recalculate. What I'd hoped is that the Garmin would get me back "on course".

What it appears to do is recalculate parts of the route, ie last night it "removed" a side road I had planned to go down and tried to take me down a longer main road which did join up.

For some of these routes I've never ridden them before so rely mostly on the unit and what I've noticed when creating it.

How do others follow new courses on a Garmin?

What settings do you use on recalculation and also Avoidance Setup?

If I go of course, can I get the Garmin to get me back on course, without recalculating the whole course?

Thanks alot,

Greg

    Same operation as the 810
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.

disable recaculate, its not needed. if you go off course you can get back to it by simply looking at the map screen.
