Apologies for schoolboy question but just buying a new cassette and chain. Will the shimano 105 5701 HG super narrow chain work with my standard FSA gossamer double compact crank? Sorry if that's an obvious question but I have no clue!! Also getting the 5700 cassette. All 10spd.

Yes. As long as you get the same speed, everything will work together (barring the obvious Shimano / Campagnolo differences).
It'll even work together using different speeds. If you want to know more, Sheldon explains it all, as always.

Thanks for that. It was just the super narrow bit that confused me as days only works with super narrow cassette but wasn't sure about how that effects the crank!0

Yes, although I'd get a KMC chain myself (should clearly indicate if 10 speed or whatever.) Bit better IMO.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

Thanks. Any particular KMC chain you'd recommend?0

KMC here. Depends on what finish and weight reduction you are looking for.
Top end = X10SL with hollow inner/outer plate and pins with DLC (Diamond-Like Coating) allowing reduced drivetrain friction
Entry = X10 (Silver/Gray or X10.93). No weight reduction.

Shimano chains are better though according to Tour Magazin.
They are cheaper as well...
