I've had the same 'standard' Garmin HRM strap since 2007 (with about 1200 hours of use) and apart from a couple or three batteries, it's been fine.
The other half has had the premium Garmin strap since 2010 and that's still going strong too.
I'd have to be asking myself what exactly you're doing to break them!

What are you doing to them ?Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.

i've used the standard garmin strap since 2009, it's been baked, frozen, scrubbed under water, still working well

I've gone through 4 of the garmin premium straps each stopped working after about 9 months, it was replaced under warranty (it is a known issue with the premium strap) for the first couple of years but now outwith the warranty period i switched to the polar wearlink strap with garmin transmitter. So far no problems.
However i have read that if you do get problems with the polar then if you cut the fabric in the middle of the two electrodes then that can help with the weird reading problem. So there will be a gap in the fabric and the strap is held together with the two buttons on the transmitter.0 -
All of my polar belts have been perfect.0

I've had a cheapie Polar belt that has outlasted anything else I own(I think). And it worked with 3 or 4 different computers. What do people do to these things?0

I started with a Garmin Premium strap which cost me about 40 quid, which lasted exactly 1 warranty period before breaking. I then heard that the problem could be solved by using the Polar strap with the Garmin transmittor which I did for a while, but it started performing totally sporadically and unpredictably. Sometimes works perfectly, sometime not at all, sometimes lasts half of the ride then gives me stupid numbers.
I'm just looking for one that works now. I'm going to be riding a lot more next year and feel like I should get to know my HR behaviour properly. I couldn't find the old garmin one (not premium) anywhere when looking.
Any options? Must be ANT+
Older version of Garmin HRM from Amazon UK. This is MUCH better than the premium version!

I had lots of problems with the Garmin soft strap. Swapped to the hard strap - no problems.0

No problems with My Garmin Strap, it's even been through the washing machine twice with no ill effects (avoid Suunto though, they re bloody useless!!) The only problem I get is that they wrinkle up if they get too sweaty, but that might be becasue I'm at the upper end of their size scale....We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Agree that the Premium Garmin strap has issues. Mine too lasted almost 1 year before giving weird readings.
Clearly, Garmin accept the problem as they replaced mine for free on the strength of a phone call.
The new one is a slightly different design, different material. Hopefully it'll last longer.0 -
2 Year warranty on the Decathlon ones and £1.99 for some ultrasound gel from amazon works for me.0

+1 my premium strap was all over the place, so sent it back.
the standard placky strap is fine. Throws a wobbly every now and again but rare enough to be okay.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0
