Front mech question

I've noticed that the front mech (SRAM X7) on my new bike is clamped directly to the frame tube, whereas the mech (SRAM X5) on my Kraken has a rubber strip between mech and frame to protect the frame (from scratches and/or overtightening, I guess). In the bits and pieces I got with the bike there's a ziplock bag containing a couple of gear cable end crimps (handy, since I need one for my Kraken, after fitting my NOS shifter) and two identical short rubber strips that look the right size - should one of those have been fitted between mech and frame tube?

nope. the seat tubes will be different diameters and the strips will not be what you think but reducers. to allow fitting to the smaller diameter tube.
