edited July 2013 in Road buying advice

I have viewed this bike last night.Lappiere Xelius 400 compact 2010/11 model.
Fits me well and rides very smooth
The chap bought it a year ago after watching the TDF then put it in the shed and now has decided to sell.
Pro carbon frame Full ultegra ,mavic wheels ,ritchley kit.
Not been "loved" a little rust on the chain ,probably nothing a good clean wouldnt put right.
I know the bike is genuine , recipts from LBS etc
He is after £1000 but I think £850 - 900 is nearer the mark ?
I am a second hand bike buying virgin so I would welcome any thoughts , advise ,any one out there could give on price what is it worth what to look for how to haggle etc.
Thanks in anticipation .

I just paid 40% of original price for a top of the range bike from 2011 in mint condition. I dont know what this bike cost new.

Just be honest with the guy, tell him you really like it, but can only really afford to pay £x. Be friendly and maybe blame the wife for not letting you spend more etc. Expect him to counter negotiate you up a bit, so maybe offer £800 or £850 first with a view to end up paying £900.

If you really like it and think its good value I wouldnt worry about paying what maybe £100 too much, whats £100 in the way of things, considering the savings over buying new.

My 2 cents. As I said before, If it looks in decent nick and it fits then its worth £900-£1000. I reckon new that was a £2k bike. You could probably sell the frame for £500, Ultegra groupo for near £300, wheels £100. Plus its a bit different. Don't take the piss out of the vendor, he wear sandals and nylon trousers.:)

Don't agree with your prices there although overall might amount to the same - frame not a desirable enough brand to fetch 500 so more like 350-400 IMO, Ultegra groupset > 300 & closer to 400 if VGC, wheels definitely more than 100 if VGC more like 180 (if they are Equipes rather than Aksiums)

Further investigation reveals that the bike was originaly £2500 and the guy got it reduced to £1800 last year.
    What is good condition ?
I dont think he has serviced it or lubed it to any degree.
Just rode it and put it in the shed. The bar tape is gruby and the chain shows surface rust, are these cosmetic and easily sorted or shoudl I be conserned and walk away ?
Thanks for the re[plies good advise is always appreciated.
    regards

No I wouldn't, but try to help yourself a little bit by applying some logic....

You can replace the chain and bar tape for £25. Might cost you a tenner more to have a bike shop do it for you. Walking away because of those cosmetic imperfections would be like deciding not to buy a used car because the rear wiper blade needed replacing.

Ignore the supposed retail price or the price he paid a year ago. It's only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it. Right now that someone is you. Decide what's the most you'd pay and negotiate.

    Update
Webt for a second test ride last night , what an epic.
I asked the seller if it was OK to ride to a near by hill to check how it climbs.
"No problem I wont be in but someone be there".
Took the bike rode it on the flat for a couple of miles everything working well felt good etc then Pssssssssssssssss.
F*** ! No tubes , patches pump etc. Had to walk back pushing the bike .
Got back to the house , told huis wife sorry I would mend the puncture.
I had stopped of on my way commute home from work so I had my gear with me.
tried to repair with Liddle patches , total waste of time , asked if seller had any, rcked around his shed found the lot Park tools pump etc.
Fixed the puncture , went to blow up tire anfd litraly "blew" up the tire.I must have twisted the tube !!
Promised I would buy a inner tube and drop it of and I beat a hasty retreat .
Called the seller on the night had a bit of a giggle offerd him £800 and he turned it down.
    Question.
Do I increase my offer or buy a Giant defy 1 on the C2w scheme.

    Make a decision FFS.

You've ridden it and now you have the choice between a good secondhand bike and a new bike in the well-rated Defy. Your call.

I think if you end up paying £900 or so then you've paid top dollar for it - he would need to clear £1000 on eBay to make £900 and I wouldn't be confident of him doing that.

Me? I would buy secondhand (at less than £900 though) assuming that all was VGC and only minor cosmetic items may need replacing eg. bar tape (surprising what a bit of Cif can do to bring up bartape though!)

If it was my money I'd be buying on the c2w, and getting the discount on something new, and perhaps topping it up if that was an option, and perhaps looking at a focus or something like that.

Personally, I wouldn't buy a s/h carbon frame unless I knew the bike and/or owner well enough to be certain of its provenance

Another month and you'll be getting the sales starting on 2013 models.

Mind you, you won't be getting Ultegra at that sort of price.

I made an offer of £800 and it was turned down , I haver taken the advise of nochekmate and left it at that.
The bike is in goodish condition and hardly used but it is a 2010 model and I feel I am been swayed by the Ultegra kit.
It goes to show what a brand name can do , the seller was delibeating between a Pinarello or this Lappiere , I bet if he had bought the Pinarello he would have sold it on e bay no problem.
Thanks for the replies chaps ,
    regards

No punctures, rode it for real last night and it is fast.
First time I have rdden a race bike as opposed to my (cyclocross) for over 25 years , forgot how fast and at times harsh ride they can be.
Needs some bar tape , never put any on before so might end up been a bit of a mess.
The local council " Get moving " team serviced it and cleaned it (free of charge) and it looks great.
Planning on testing the climbing capabillities up "Rosedale chimney bank on Sunday.

There are some good Youtube videos on putting bar tape on.... take a look.

Key points, based on making mistakes...
    - make sure you wrap it the right way around (otherwise you'll unwind the tape when riding!)
    - personally (as I have had problems with some tape slipping), I generally use a small bit of insulation tape at the start (that obviously gets hidden when you wrap). Now I'm sure this isn't required if done properly (wrapped tightly enough), but for a "learner bar mechanic" is does seem to help (especially if you have carbon bars - that obviously have less grip for the tape). Some tape comes with a sticky backing, that obviously makes the above a non issue

I should have read this before I put the tape on.
watched the videos , read the book bought the t shirt and still ended up two inches short !
Thought I would be clever and cut a bit off to use as extra cushioning on the tops , mistake.
Any how it is on now looks ok from a distance and didn't feel to bad on my ride so will do for the rest of summer.
