Hi Guys

After suffering with doing long cycles (c.90k) at the weekends on my hybrid i want to trade up and get a proper road bike. Originally i was looking in the price bracket of around 800 euro but i am now sold on the idea of an all carbon frame so hence i am looking at a ball park figure of 1500 euro. i figure i do want a triple gear option to help me up the hills. I am not looking to be the fastest but more have a bike that is comfortable for long rides out with friends and friendly long distance races.
Would love some advice, am i being an idiot going for the additional expense of the carbon frame? What benefits will i get.
I do like the look of the La Pierre.

Thanks for any advice.
Gill

  • I you can afford it get Carbon as you already know you like cycling so you will use it - personally I've been lusting after a Roubaix for years :D
  • thanks! Do you know anything about the La Pierre?

Sorry no - the Defy gets rave reviews though but you would probably need to specify which model to get specific feedback. A few members on here ride them I'm a Roubaix fan because I currently have a Sectuer so I know the geometry and size suit me pretty well so if I bought one its a known commodity. I like my Secteur but I suffer from Carbon envy

My mate bought a Secteur last year, so I had to buy a Roubaix of course. I bought the Sport Compact so of course he then went and bought the Elite a few months after. He says the carbon frame soaks up the road vibration and it's more comfortable than the Secteur, especially on long rides. I must admit I love mine. I had the stem flipped when I first bought it but I've got a bit more flexible now so flipped it back yesterday. I did my first 57 miler today and it was lovely. I ache everywhere but that's down to my age and being unfit.

I have a Giant Defy Advanced, which I've had for 2 years. I've done sportive, and the Dunwich Dynamo on which I covered 125 miles. It's an excellent bike, fantastic frame quality and very comfortable.
    I would happily recommend one.

The Sensium 200 had a recent review in Cycling plus magazine. They said excellent frame which is future proofed (Di2 ready) with top notch hardware. They didn't have a bad word to say about it except for average tyres and pads. They thought it amazing value for money at £1299.

I must admit I like the look of the Lapierre.

Personally I would get the Lapierre - its a bit different. Not so many on the roads and vs the Giant its well, just sexier in my eyes. French and Italian brands are a bit of exotica, which is always nice :)

thanks! Do you know anything about the La Pierre?

Test rode one when buying my Defy. Felt too upright and sluggish in comparison. I also tried a Focus Cayo which was totally the opposite of the Lapierre. In the end I went for the middle ground of the Defy (but probably should have bought the Focus!)
