Pretty fuming myself. Only had 4hrs left to get my 30hr badge on strava. Would've been tempted to have a bowl of MTFU for breakfast and brave it, but the 40mph crosswind PLUS the heavy rain made me rethink.
  • Living in a coastal area it always seems worse. Looks like the weather will be nice next week though.

Was cycling in Guernsey a week or so ago, the wind off the coast there was crazy!

Almost got blown off a couple of times and did eventually crash when I came around a corner on some country lanes and lost my wheels from under me on account of two inches thick sand that had been blown off the beach! The sand was obscured by the grass on the roadside, so I took the corner fairly wide, leaning the bike as I could see no cars coming. Lesson learnt I suppose.
  • Only recently started road cycling, in last 3 sundays ive managed 14 miles then 24 miles and today i manged 30 miles, conditions were awful wind and rain and a renault megane driver thinking he was jenson button.
glad i went out though, when the sun comes back out it will make it all worth while.

Think today was as windy as I've ridden, the gusts felt dangerous. Managed to get through my planned 100 but kept the speed well down on most of the roads.

It's been like this pretty much all month!

out of the saddle and doing 9mph this morning, I gave up and turned around only to find a headwind still, how that's even possible i have no idea.

Sick to death of this UK weather now, its been shite for a couple of years, either torrential rain, snow or gale force wind, when do we get the scorching sunshine?

After 2 weeks in the canaries, today didn't feel bad! Trying to get round hairpins when you can't actually change the direction your wheel is pointing in because the wind is so strong is interesting

The weather here doesn't seem to have been too bad here today tbh - did the Ripon Revolution Sportive and there was one rain shower and a couple of short sections where you felt the wind, but 77 miles were ticked off with no real weather issues which was a bonus given the forecast and the pre-ride warnings :)

I did a 50 mile ride in mid wales with 20mph winds in places

It felt like a 150 mile ride at the end!

Did 27 in this today, I too was nearly own off a couple of times, wasn't half fun on the way back cruising with a tail wind.

Although at some points going up some steep hills in my lowest gear, I felt I could have walked up quicker.

As someone who's only been ridding a few months i didn't enjoy getting blown off my bike for the first time, however i'm sure its part of being a cyclist..

Like i said, just gutted i didn't get any miles in this weekend, after having a great 70mile ride last weekend in again windy conditions but not deadly windy like today

  • Didn't even bother going out this weekend. The average was 30+mph (36-39 at times) with gusts of over 50 in the Merseyside area. I usually head towards south Lancashire and around there it is windy even when the weatherman says otherwise, so it was far too risky.

Might get out a few nights this week instead. :)

That bit when you pass a gap in a hedge or between houses and the crosswind hits you like a maniac with a baseball bat.

Yeah weather not as bad as forecast but I did the epic 102m route and definitely felt that headwind in the last 10-15 miles! heavy shower at the top of the lofthouse climb and windy going up Greenhow bank/brimham rocks but on the flipside there was a great section on the descent down from Greenhow bank, wind behind and flew!

I think the scary thing are the gaps in hedges so I agree with rpherts. Similar o when a lorry or bus overtakes, sucked one way then the other.

The headwinds when you just lean into it and push harder aren't very nice but you can get used to them.

I can remember going quite fast down a hill, didn't think it was that windy a day, got to a break in the trees or couple of houses and the hit from the wind made me wobble as i tried to compensate, then past the gap so was overcompensating! It may have only been a bit of a wobble but at that speed it really scared me, and it's been at the back of my mind whenever I've been down that hill again.

 I usually sit behind someone to see them get hit by the gust and I can kind of brace myself!

Went out in 60-70mph gusts a couple of months back (wasn't that bad when i went out, got a LOT worse after a couple of hours), genuinely terrifying

I was mountain biking along the SDW on Saturday - VERY windy... mostly a tailwind, but you could see riders leaning into the 45mph gusts on the crosswind sections. At least on a bridleway you're not going to be run over if you are blown sideways.

I started out virtually on the beach at Hoylake and nearly didnt bother when i saw next door's flagpole bending in the wind and the flag had blown off in the night. Still - got myself out there and did 90 miles down into Cheshire with 35 miles riding into the headwind heading back home! A tough day for sure - but certainly more managable going inland a bit.

Hard weekend to be on the bike. The wind was relentless.

I have never in my entire cycling life had a speed shimmy. Until this weekend.

Coming down a hill near Hexham, the cross winds were really causing me to struggle as I tried to correct the bike as I was being buffetted by the wind.

I can only think it was this constant buffetting and my corrections that started the wobble. I was probably only doing around 50kph at the time.

Bloody scary, and I know there are those that say accelerate out of the shimmy - but no way did I have the balls for that! Slowing the bike was very hard indeed - even as I got it to under 20kph, the shimmy was feeling worse and I was about ready to throw myself off the bike. It felt like the whole front end of the bike was detached.

Speaking to others later, it does seem that others have experienced shimmy with very strong crosswinds. One to watch out for.

Anyway - I survived, that's the main thing. And the ride was awesome!
