Hey,

Will be getting some new wheels in a few weeks which will have 38mm deep clincher rims. Will tubes with 48mm long valves be about right?

Cheers

60 would be better. Some pump heads need more than 10mm to connect.

38 normally includes the brake track, so the actual depth of the rim from the rim bed is less than that... it might be enough, but I would go for 60 mm, just in case your pump head needs more room

Good point that about quoted rim depth.

Will go with 60mm then to be sure. Cheers
  • 38mm clinchers, which ones did SMIDSY & UGO recommend?

Using Mavic Ultimate tubulars (about 45mm deep I think) with Vittoria CX's I just use the standard valve - this gives me about 8mm of valve showing, to which I screw on an extension when I pump them up.

My can of sealant I carry has the extension pre-screwed into it, so I can use that if I get a problem.

Not sure if this is the best way about it, but it's worked well for the last 2 years and keeps the wheel aero (no point having bladed spokes if you have a huge valve extension spinning around on the fastest part of the wheel!)

I don't like having an extension permanently screwed on inside the rim, as I've had problems with these leaking in the past (with 50mm rims).
