Cheating on Strava - what's the point?

Everyone seems to have heard about that site where you can speed up your gpx data to get faster times on Strava.
What's the point, and why would someone create such a thing?
Some thoughts (and reflections from the twittersphere) here:

There is no real point in it, if you submit a cheating time you don't win anything and you'll know you've done it by cheating.

    Fame? Fortune? Females?

I'll receive these if I get some KOMs right?
  • Is this about 'Accidental KOM's'

    Again.

Winding up your (too fit) riding buddies?

    That's a good reason.

Is that implying that they are properly juiced up?!
  • Strava's a great piece of harmless fun.

That said, as far as I'm concerned, uploading altered data is on pretty much the same plane of pointless insanity as taking Strava seriously in the first place. It's like getting upset that your football team consistently scores less than your mate's team despite your mate playing rugby.

I'd say your question is more pointless...

With the Wii, I thought that sport was moving indoor, but then Strava comes along, and that is the videogames are moving outdoors.
It is obvious why anyone would cheat on Strava... I don't use GPS technology, but I would definitively cheat if I did... the same way as I cheated in videogames when I found a way to do it... who wouldn't want to see his name on top of the list? It's human nature and all this bllxxit of deserving to be there is simply innatural.

A stag would easily mate with another's female deer without fighting for it, if the opportunity came along... I've seen it on Autumn watch, that's natural behaviour...

Not at all, just that they are faster than me, train harder than me and go out specifcally to win KOMs.

He might get a few downhill KOMs without having to resort to cheating though.

Actually, I feel bad for posting that photo. He's out on a bike, good for him!

hes trying unlike most....fair play to the chap.

Quite so, he's doing something about his fitness rather than sitting on the sofa, which is not something we should be poking fun at.

I would only be cheating myself as that the only person I am trying to beat. I really like Strava. I was actually quite depressed on Sunday when my Garmin managed to lose my 65 mile ride. Last night I wasn't really feeling it but wanted to make the most of the calm conditions. Rode recovery pace but used a few local segments for a bit of interval training. Managed a couple of Top 10s and another couple of PBs. Turned a lethargic night into a worthwhile bit of training.

So another whining thread about digital-epo, universally despised by people who've never seen it used (you've not), that then descends into a bunch bashing of a smiling photograph of a chap out enjoying his bike. Give yourselves a pat on the back chaps.

    I think he looks cool.

I'm still curious about the motive for creating digital epo. It's either someone's way of having a bit of a laugh, or it's a deliberate effort to damage Strava's credibility.

As with any gaming cheats, it's going to the two above plus an element of "because I can". Given that it's such a trivial thing to actually put together (adjust a few timestamps and that's it), it's hardly surprising it exists.

In 10 years time I can see myself on oprah admitting to using digialepo to get KOM segments, after having them all stripped off me.
  • You can have Strava KOM's stripped off you?

    I'm out.

I happen to know this chap and since that photo he has lost over 4 stone in under 6 months. He has since bought a road bike too and is enjoying his cycling and the new found fitness. If only i could lose as much weight and be as disciplined. He is also a thoroughly nice chap and has never blamed anyone other than himself for getting that big and i appluad him for sorting himself out. I put him on to Strava and he says it really helps with his motivation.

Anyone can cheat if they have a driving licence and are determined enough.

    It's pathetic really.

I have a fake KOM which I have spoken to strava about and they have done nothing.
I dont want to delete it as I really want to keep the location on my strava but really feel for the true KOM and others who have done the ride far faster than me.

As for faking on purpose, I wouldnt worry, you cant argue with, nor understand madness :)
