Hello all,

I'm about to take the move to clip less pedals, now I have bought my pedals ( pd - r540 spd sl ) , and would like advice on my first shoes, do I buy brand new, or would second hand be ok , I've seen some in the classified section on here, I am getting some cyclescheme vouchers a week on Tuesday ( new shoes ? ), or is it a personal fitting procedure that should be done in the shop.

Thanks for any advice.

Tony. :D

It's like any other pair of shoes really, they have to fit and you have be comfortable. Sizing does vary amongst the brands as well. I got my first pair, many years ago, from a market stall, but tried them on first.

Just bought some keos and been looking at road shoes. Tried loads on and the fit between the price ranges is quite astounding even in the same manufacturers range. Got big wide feet (size 48. uk 12) so more of a hastle.

TBH with things like helmets and shoes I think it is best that you try the shoes on in store to find the ones that fit. . The insoles of shoes bed to the foot shape so second hand though cheaper you are getting the other persons foot mould until you replace the sole padding.

The Shimano R107 has been discontinued and so you can find them with 50% off.

I'd buy new. If you want to buy cheap, there are fibreglass options out there, if you go to £100, there are carbon soled options out there. You want to make sure they fit more than ANYTHING else and all brands differ slightly on size. I have some lovely suplests that I bought over the internet, but they differ in size and neither pair are as comfy as the Shimanos that I own. Just a shame for me that I don't like the Shimano looks. I have had to send back other shoes that I bought online cos they don't fit, despite using online comparison tools.

Shoes are one thing I would NEVER buy second hand (along with helmets (and probably bib shorts))- they mould themselves to your feet
