So i got suckered in to buying a new project build. already spent more than i wanted to and i just started building tonight and realised i need even more bits.

SLX groupset from merlin

So heli-taped the frame before starting this time
then fitted headset and the most pointless pressfit bottom bracket (which i had to buy extra as the groupset comes with threaded  )

new SLX cranks look nice and i had some spare crank skins so covered them up so they stay fresh.

Rear mech and Rear brake fitted, cant do much more until forks arrive.

now i need a stem and a direct fit slx front mech  anyone need a brand new slx front mech?

be v careful with heli-tape on the frame, i had the carbon race 29er frame & i did the same thing as you to try to protect it, 6 months on the tape was peeling at the edge a little so i decided to replace it, i warmed the tape with a hairdryer slightly & peeled the tape back very slowly & it came off easily, unfortunately it took all the laquer off with it, made a right mess, it had not keyed at all, called warranty & they didnt want to know, great colour tho! :D

  • I'll second that - I used it on my aluminium bike and when I decided I didn't want it on there it took some paint off with it! I didn't warm it first but was still a little miffed at the irony!

It's a mountain bike. Stratches are like scars - bit ugly but tell a story  Needles to say I'll be crying when my new cotic gets it's first one

Nice looking frame that. I fancy trying the 29er thing and with them at knock down price ATM it's very tempting.

One question though. How much clearance is there between the chainrings and the chain stay? I have a C456 and it's very tight for clearance and what with the BB92 I thought it mught be pretty tight too.

Yeah it is, when I was putting it in I thought it was going to youch the frame!
Tge 29er thing ive b een doing gor some time , there's pros and cons but for general xc I feel it to be faster

    Thought it might be tight.

Most of what I do is XC and the C456, although very light, is just a bit too much for me. The only 29er I've ridden so far though was a Spesh Carve basic model from last year. It was quick in a straight line but quite sluggish on the tight stuff. Very comfy too though.

Obviously depends on the set up , but it has to be very twisty for my 26" to be faster

  • Hi
I've just ordered the lurcher but struggling with which front mech to buy. As I'm using my deore hollowtech 2 triple 22-32-44 9 speed chain set I need one that's compatible - the only one I can find is the shimano xt m771 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mobile/MobileModels.aspx?ModelID=83646 but the spec suggests that this is for bikes with a 66-69 degree chain stay to seat tube angle but the on-one site suggests the lurchers is 73 degrees :-s I'm confused. Can anyone advise whether or not it will work as the only ones avail seem to be 66-69 degrees?
  • Thanks - I looked at those and yes ideally id like to go to a 10 speed and ditch the big ring but it would mean a new rear mech, cassette, chain, crank and front mech. But my budget wont allow hence if I can get a compatible mech for my triple for now that would be better.
The green frame looks great - that's the one i'm waiting for :-) I'm really enjoying the 29er experience since getting the inbred last year so this seems like the natural upgrade....apart from the mech complications :-D

i have the same set up on Beyonce and she's 9 speed but with a double up front, you can make your tripple into a double easily but i would suggest a bash guard.

  • Yup seems like a good option, hardly use the big ring anyway as mostly on the trails these days. I've ordered the 3x9 XT direct mount anyway, and if the angle thing doesn't work ill swap it for an slx 2x10 and drop the big ring. Should be ok to run a 10 spd mech with 9spd

All the cables are too long, could skip on the brake hoses.

I like it. Frame has a lovely shape. Could be a stupid question, but how comes you went for the rigid fork?

Just for pure lightness and speed, this is being built as pure XC race bike, nothing else.
