A few questions - new bike!

Hi all, eventually decided to venture over from the other side of the forum!
I'm looking to get a road bike for some training (for mountain bike racing), and commuting over the summer, 16 miles each way. I'm a student also, and I've no plans to get into road racing, but I might do the odd sportive, and will be doing a fair few longish rides.
My LBS stocks Giant and Specialized, and as I race for them, I get 20% discount. I'm thinking about getting a Specialized Allez Sport for £580. I think I prefer it to the nearest Giant Defy.
Is it a good buy? Are there any bikes elsewhere that compare for the money? Do you know if the specialized has mudguard/pannier mounts on the frame?
Also, I'm planning on putting mountain bike pedals (M520's) on so I can use the same shoes for both bikes - is there anything wrong with this? Why are road bike pedals/cleats different - larger surface area?
I'm dead excited to get out on it and start putting in some miles, so all help is appreciated!
Thanks,
Adam

Just cycled from John O'Groats to Lands End on mine - www.stuartmole.co.uk
I like it, but if you have the money go for the next model up with Tiagra rather than Sora.
Looks much better than a Defy.0 -
That's some journey, and a good cause. It looks far nicer than the defy! I think i'll stick with the sora for now, my mtb is still 9 speed as well! What height/frame size are you?0
-
I think that mine is the 56cm. Although I am 6ft tall, I have shortish legs and a longer body, so probably the same as an average 5ft10/11 rider in terms of frame size.
The Sora has worked fairly well for me over the 2000+ miles I have done in the last few months, but I do know that the Tiagra has smoother gear changes and would be easier to upgrade in future as parts wear out - as mine is already starting to because of the JOGLE.0 -
Yeah I'm on the border of 56cm/58cm - will make sure to get properly fitted when I go in, sadly there's no chance of a test ride. I know where you're coming from, but due to the budget I'll have to stick with sora!
Did you use racks/panniers for your JOGLE? Not sure if I'm going to use them, may just stick with a rucksack for commuting.0 -
I have a Carradice Nelson Longflap with the expedition carrier attached to the seat post. It worked well, but I was travelling quite light considering the amount of miles and travelling solo.0

I shouldn't worry about putting M520's on a road bike. I too have both a road and mountain bike and it's expensive enough without needing to factor in another pair of shoes that only fit one of your set ups. Once on the bike most people won't even be able to see them so it's only going to be the snobby sorts that might take exception and give you some stick.0
