hi,
im doing my first etape this year and the first time riding in the mountains so just want to get an idea of clothing that i need.
i was speaking to my lbs that suggested for the descents a gilet as it might get chilly even if its 20 degrees plus at the start.
am i being cynical in that they are just trying to sell me more items or is a gilet a worth while item to carry with me?
i know its impossible to know the weather 5 weeks in advance but are arm warmers a good thing to carry too?
thoughts appreciated, thanks

Last year acte 2, I had vest type base layer, ss jersey, Gillet, Packable long sleeve w poof, arm warmers. Needed all of it. The descents were wet and very very cold, leading to lots being taken away with hypothermia. Was fine on the uphills with gillet on, put the long sleeves on for the 20 Km descents. I don't think this year is as high or as long a descents, but much better having it than abandoning due to cold like many did after first descent.0

i heard last year was a toughie, hoping for better weather this year.
thanks for your thoughts. i reckon i will buy a gillet and bring all my kit so all bases covered.
will definatley take arm warmers and make a call on the morning as to what else to pack but reckon a gillet will come with me0 -
gilet for sure. I did acte 1 which was glorious weather, but useful for the descents and the early start.
then arm warmers or even arm screens depending on the forecast (or coat/overshoes if terrible forecast)Parlee Altum - "summer"
Felt VR5 - "winter"
Trek Triton Singlespeed - "commuter"0 -
Definitely gilet and I'd have a full sleeve rain jacket too. Weather is so changeable - and it's not like you won't get use out of it over here is it ?0
