Hi All,

I'm looking for my first road bike, I have a budget of £200 for a second hand bike. I'm aware that this will only get you the basic of new road bikes hence looking for a second hand one.

Are there any obvious choices for this sort of budget or should I be looking to spend more money?

Save another £100 and get the Triban 3, always gets good reviews, good service and lots of stores (decathlon). Anything else will be a lottery at that price.

Lookout for a second hand bottom of the range Carrera thats been lightly used, only £300 new so should be able to get a barely used one for £200 or less.
  • Hi Both,

    Thanks for the quick reply,

I would prefer to stick to the £200 mark just out of choice really. I'm not 100% sure whether it'll get used lots yet.

I will take a look at the suggested Carrera range.

You may pick up an early Specialized Allez or Giant SCR for that sort of budget (but it will be tight!)
  • I'm going to look at a Carrera Virtuoso 2012 tomorrow / friday looks good and £200.

    Hi

Make sure you get gears that are 'friendly' to use, ie, 50/39/30 or 50/34 at the front and a rear cassette that goes to about 28.

Try and avoid hard man set ups of 53/42 at the front and 11-23 at the back, etc

Not wishing to be rude, but if I were the OP, I would stick with the Carrera Virtuoso option. Here's a review of the Viking Roma.

There you go as if by magic, this is what I said you might get if interested (and if size is correct)

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GIANT-SCR4-RO ... 257e8744bd

Now here's an offer - if it's too far for you to collect, I could do it for you as it's very local and I could then courier it to you for £25 extra. All free gratis from fellow Bikeradar forum member.

Trouble with that is it's £200 with 29 days to go. My experience has been that Ebay is infested with idiots paying over the odds for bikes. Very frustrating for a bargain hunter.

It's £200 with a Buy It Now price you muppet so the fact that it has 29 days to go is immaterial (you could even take the best offer option so could get it for less).

The fact that muppets pay over the odds makes it a good place to sell bikes but there are occasional bargains that crop up. I think for that figure, which could be £180 or so, then the Giant represents reasonable value assuming it's not in bad nick (I might even buy it myself and sell it on for profit  )

Ah, didn't spot that! Clearly in full muppet mode yesterday. The OP should buy it immediately!
