I'd like to purchase a new road bike, here you can see two pictures, I'm 178 cm tall and 85.5 cm inseam.
The measurements are in international system (cm) and not in imperial system, I apologise for that.

Do you need other measurements like the arm ?

Your height and inseam are almost identical to mine. The medium would appear to be the best fit for you based on the virtual top tube length of 550mm. Is the bike you are looking at the Battaglin S11?

the thing is a really good bike mechanic (he worked in the italian national mtb and cyclocross team) always told me to purchase a size 56 or 57, the M would be a 55 and I fear it's gonna be too small for me
Tomorrow I'll post some more measurements of the trunk and arm in the hope of shedding some light on the issue.
I really need to order the bike from wiggle before the end of this month as free delivery to europe on the bikes will end at the end of this month, probably I'll have to pay 40-50 £ for shipping after that.

You're confusing effective seat tube based sizing for effective top tube.

No company names their frame sizes based on effective top tube lengths.

Based on your height you'll most likely be medium, no way you'll need a large with an 575 effective top tube.

yes when I meant 56/57 I was referring to the effective seat tube.

this is the size guideline from the manufacturer, what do you think ?
I am in the M for the height, but in the L for the inseam

I downloaded an excel file from the manufacturer website https://www.dropbox.com/s/tknc1x76khsra ... 2013-1.xls , please check it out and click on "ROAD-SIZE" on the bottom of the page

Yes very interesting, it suggests you are in between the large and the medium - I would go for the smaller size as it is generally easier to fit to a smaller frame than it is a larger frame. The excel file is I believe a guideline - I suspect you will have a fair bit of seat post showing on the medium and a more aggressive (racier fit) than on the large. You have quite a large inseam for your height thus your trunk should be relatively short - the shorter top tube of the medium should suit better than the possibly too long top tube of the large.

thank you for your opinion, at the moment I'm collecting as much information as possible, tomorrow I'll talk with the manufacturer and the seller and sort it out, I strongly hope the manufacturer will give me a more precise advice based on arm and trunk as well.
  • Go for the large and it may feel like you are riding a plank of wood

I've taken all the measures requested by competitive cyclist fit calculator and this is the result

for reference purposes, here it is the geometry of the frame

Top tube is key and that suggst M is better for you than L, which will be too much of a stretch.

As a sense check you're similar height (a smidge shorter) to me but a tad longer legged/shorter bodied and my top tube is 56cm, so that suggests M again.

Definitely the medium, the effective top tube of the large is a stretch. The seat tube length is not an issue - you will have about 20cm of seat post showing on the medium which is fine. I suspect you will get a 100mm stem with the medium which should be close to the competitive fit suggested. It will likely be a fairly aggressive fit - a decent drop between saddle and bars, however, since you are Italian that should be ideal!

it turns out the measures of B and C are inverted, as a result for the M the B is 535 mm while the C is 550 mm, for the L the B is 560 mm while the C is 575 mm
I've just spoken with battaglin customer service
