MTB for Xterra Racing

Hey Guys,
I've been looking at getting back into MTBing for some time, and i've finally taken the plunge and signed up for Xterra England as an incentive! But I need to get my hands on a bike...
Have you guys got any recommendations on bikes that would be good for a reasonably flat/fast MTB course? As the one they've designed is more about general fitness than the technical aspects of Mountain Riding(!) Ideally I don't want to spend any more than £600 as I'm just getting back into it.
Cheers!
Rich
(P.S. I know there's a post about good starter bikes for this kind of Price range, but I'm really not a fan of Halfords/Decathlon)

The Xterra England course would be fine on a cyclocross bike, hopefully the course will be a little drier than last year, but it's totally flat and not remotely technical.
Halfords/Decathlon likely offer the best value, perhaps look second hand, or accept you may end up missing the best options for a personal judgement.0
