I would be the first to admit that I dont cycle overly fast, i'm not on strava or anything like that! But this morning I was overtaken by two MTBers when i was taking it leisurely (even for me!) and thought they might have sped up to overtake me and so i upped my pace and just sat behind them to make them keep going at that speed for as long as I could before I got bored then overtook them!

For this to be even remotely interesting, you would need to swap the MTB's for road bikes, and you be on the MTB.

    Heh.

I got stalked by some guy on what looked like a MTB or hybrid yesterday when I was time trialling it on the way home. Brought down the hammer and dropped him on the Cardiff Bay barrage only for him to sail past me on an incline in Penarth on the other side. I was mightily impressed by this and he saw me checking him out in surprise and explained that his bike was an electric one as we whizzed past on the hill using his motor. He should have kept his mouth shut I might never have noticed and he would have remained a legend.

If they were being tw*ts and you puffed them out whilst getting a free draft then I think that was fair enough, but how do you know they were not just going that fast anyway and all you did was keep up with them (in their draft) for a while?

Would it not have been better to have overtaken them back and try to make them chase you?

sorry was only meant to be a mildly humorous anecdote! but i will stand tall and accept the backlash!!

I only knew they werent just going that fast after I over took them and they disappeared behind me!

Funny thing happen to me yesterday evening, on a quiet road. The lady cycling a couple of metres ahead of me suddenly started to pedal faster, so I pedaled faster. Then she started to sprint, so I started sprinting. Then she screamed, so I screamed

I never even saw who we were trying to get away from!?

Well done on facing the flak

Still don't get the concept of staying behind them though. Maybe they felt stalked and were releived you shot off.
You needed to overtake them to know what they were up to, and even then being on a road bike is not a fair fight.

I think overtake and shoot straight off is the only real option.
If you got bored at the faster pace you were pushing them with, how did you survive at the slower pace they overtook you at?

I dont usually get overtaken by anyone but if I do I just sit up, start pedalling slowly and pretend like I wasn't going very fast at all, and I am just pootling along taking in the sights.

But deep down I am CRYING!

  • Always overtake in as big a gear as possible, pushing a ridiculously slow cadence.

On my ride the other day, my Garmin froze so I had no map. I overtook a couple of people on hybrids/mountain bikes while going down a hill. Then, because of not having a map, I took a wrong turn and did three miles when had I gone the right way, I'd have only done one.

When I got back on track, I joined the correct road again just as they were passing the junction and starting to go up a small hill. I might have done just what you said going up that hill ;)

i'll admit maybe I got carried away and on second thoughts this story was maybe one to re-count at leisure when my friends are struggling to sleep! but on first inspection it seemed to have everything:
a near 6 foot 3 lycra clad leggy blond (if you ignore the fact that was me its better!)
    a thrilling chase
good prevailing over evil (i have no way of knowing who they were so i'll assume they were criminals!)
ups and downs (it was quite hilly!)
    and a happy ending!

if walt disney were alive he'd already be sketching me as a plucky squirrel chasing down two angry wolves or something!!

  • Few weeks back and 20 odd miles into a steady 40 miler i got taken on an uphill by a young lad around 30yrs my junior who was on a MTB. Fair play, he clearly knocked his pan in whilst doing so and i jokingly said that if he could keep it up for the next 20 miles i would give him 20 quid. Whilst side by side he jokingly replied 'no ****ing way', we both had a laugh and he then eased off and fell back. Bottom line = MTB teenager and old git roadie had a bit of a quip, no need to get hung up being 'taken' by an MTB rider who has clearly emptied the tank and busted a gut to do so.
