Cracking noise coming from pedal area.

I'm not sure if the noise is coming from the pedal, crank or bb. But it's only on one side on the downstroke and it doesn't happen when pedalling hard or just turning the pedal by hand. I've checked for movement down there but there in't any. Any ideas what it might be?

Check your cleat bolts are greased and snugged up then lightly grease chainring bolts and tighten to spec and if that dosen't work (it probably won't) check your chainset is correctly torqued in the BB with any side to side play removed. If that doesn't do the trick just replace the BB which usually does the job. I find Shimano BB's do this when they start to wear a bit but well before you can feel any play by hand.

If that still doesn't work my money would be on the headset bearings being loose/needing lube/needing replacing as I've mistaken the sound of that for BB wear a couple of times. After that there's the seat rails being lubed (if metal) and tight enough too. I could go on....

All cheap stuff to sort out so no worries :)

Pedal bearings or BB, try loosening them off greasing what can be greased and re-tourquing. Start saving up for a new BB or pedal bearings ;)

i had something very similar a few days ago only on one side of the crank and only on down stroke under pressure, tried everything to no avail, went into the LBS brought out a F off big spanner and tightened the pedals and it went away.

    What gear combos?
    Seated? Standing?

    Got any tools?

Or if you're using Look classic pedals then that's just what they do.

Also try some WD40 {some suggest furniture polish} sprayed onto the contact area of your cleats and pedals. Just worked a treat for me, and saved me rashly buying new BB and/or chainrings. Good luck, John

Number 1: Take the offending crank arm off, degrease, regrease, reinstall, check again.

If problem persists see Number 2.

Number 2: Your BB is screwed.

I expect it's your SPDs chastising you for giving up on them so quickly.

Other things to check are saddle rails (sounds mad but trust me) and wheel quick release skewers. It's often hard to tell where sounds are coming from on a bike.
