Mavic Aksium cassette fitting woes

I bought a lightly used pair of Mavic Aksium wheels and they came fitted with a 10 speed shimano cassette. My bike is running 9 speed so I want to move the cassette over from my old wheelset. So after some googling I've found that to run a 10 speed setup on the Aksium I need a 1mm shimano spacer plus a 1.75mm Mavic spacer. However when I took the 10 speed cassette off it actually had a single spacer that was 2.45mm. I then bought a 1.75mm Mavic spacer off the web thinking that was what I needed to fit my 9 speed cassette but after putting it all together there is still play in the cassette and the lockring won't tighten. I don't have any other spacers to hand but I tried the 2.45mm one that was on the 10 speed setup and it was too thick. Any idea what I'm supposed to do?

TL/DR version: Why doesn't the 1.75mm Mavic (M40417) plus 9 speed Shimano HG cassette fit on my Mavic wheels with a M10 freehub body?

EDIT: I've figured it out. Turns out the threads on the lockring were really gunked up and wouldn't engage properly with the freehub threads which made me think the lockring was bottoming out when it actually wasn't!

Thanks!

have you read the topic in the FAQs?

    what was the old cassette?

it should if all is correct.

Yeah I followed the instructions, specifically this bit:
With Mavic wheels you need a Mavic spacer for any Shimano cassette (this is assuming an M10 freehub body, as the cassette won't fit at all on an ED10 Campag body). Additional spacers as above - ie none for 8/9, an extra spacer for 7, a different extra spacer for 10.

The cassette I want to fit is a 9 speed Shimano HG50 and the old cassette that worked is a Shimano Ultegra (CS-6700) plus a single 2.45mm spacer.

What I find confusing is that when the wheels were fitted with a shimano 10 speed cassette it didn't have the shimano (1mm) + mavic spacers (1.75mm) but only had a single 2.45mm spacer, which I wouldn't have expected to work?
