I am having trouble on connecting my new silver 8 speed powerlink to my shimano hg50 chain.

Is this setup not compatible?

Pull each side of the chain, hard.

or just get on the bike, put in a high gear and pedal...should do the trick

Yep, had the same issue with the exact same setup. Did exactly this. Got it nearly there then got on and peddled. Sorted.

Unless it doesn't catch and you crack your nuts on the stem.

    Pliers or the right tool.

Eh? Why do you need tools? Tension through the chain and a locked back brake is all you need.

Just quick update, after having the chain off a few times the powerlink is now easy to remove and connect.

How does tension through the chain and a locked back brake get it off then? Normally just tightens it more?

'Got it on with some pliers' on and pliers. On = on Pliers = Tools. Why would you new tools to get it on when you can use your bike as the tool. Clear enough for you Simon?

Clearer now, it sounded like you were answering my post about using pliers or the right tool for getting it off, as mine was the only post that used the word tool.....

That is actually part of the instructions for the SRAM 10sp chain link!
