twisted derailleur hanger

I have a Carbonzone RB002 rame that I have just ridden for only the 5th time. It was brought secondhand but unused on ebay.
I was climbing a fairly steep hill in first gear and all of a sudden the back wheel locked. I nearly came off but managed to get my feet out in time. Looking down I have seen that the derailleur has bent right over. At least the hanger has. and stuck in the spokes. The jocky wheel has broken out of the cage also. I enclose photos.

As yet I am unsure if the frame is damaged. at first glance it seems that maybe just the hanger is bent. this is detachable.
I wonder how this could have happened and if it has happened to anyone else. Also if without seeing whether you think the frame would be okay.

Can this be just because of the stress of riding up a hill. It was fairly steep but I am not hugely powerul, I was in first gear and at steady pace.

I have the documents from the original buyer and will check if they are still within warrenty. I so do you think I can get a replacement?
Thats a lot of questions I know. Sorry, but at the moment I am a bit gutted. I am doing the Ride London in August for UNICEF and I was just starting to get into some propper training after the cold weather.

This does happen and the usual cause is that the RD has not been properly adjusted allowing it to go too far towards the wheel. It may be that the RD is unscathed but you will certainly need a new hanger. Given that this is a carbon framed bike it would be wise to have it examined by a bikes shop accustomed to working on carbon frames as if your frame is cracked, it could give way very suddenly with serious consequences.

    Thankyou for the reply.
Yes. the thought of riding the frame is not filling me with confidence. I haven't had a chance to go over it to closely yet . On further investigation through Google I understand from one post that the hanger is supposed to break through high stress to save the frame. Is that the case?
The frame does have several nasty scratches on the rear stays from the chain. ( see the second photo) I wonder if these would be considered superficial or maybe something that could develop into a structural problem. I will definitely get it checked out though.
I also read that a chain pin can come out and cause this problem although as I was on the biggest sprocket your possible explanation sound more plausible. I suspect closer inspection will show up problems with the spokes as well. Oh well, at least I wasn't going down the hill.

Yes, the derailleur hanger is a sacrificial part and designed to break so that the frame doesn't. As already said, this kind of failure generally happens when the rear mech is allowed to hit the spokes, and this in turn is often when the mech hanger has been bent when the bike has been crashed or has fallen over onto the rear mech.
