Giant Defy 0

Thanks for looking.
I'm thinking to get the Defy 1. They're winning lots of awards in all the press and magazines. But my lbs doesn't have my size in stock. And I'd rather support a lbs over online for a purchase like this. So then I consider the Defy 0, looks nice but you do actually get some noticeable upgrades over the 1 with gears and breaks etc. So now I'm thinking to push myself and go for the zero instead.
Better that, or go for the Defy 2, and spend years wishing I'd got the 0
Anyone else got one for this year. How you finding it?
I might try an negotiate In the bike shop see if anything can be done on the price. I don't know if the price is fixed/set by the manufacture or if there is room for negotiation. The shop does offer interest free over 36 months so you'd think I might be able to do something.
Anyway hoping to go for the defy0, just wondering what you think about the bike. And if you've got one how you feel about the ride.
Cheers, Jon

Hi Jon,
I have a Defy 0 which I bought a couple of months ago. The main upgrades over the 1 are an Ultegra rear mech/shifters and slightly better brakes (Shimano non series over Tektro on the 1). I bought mine principally because I preferred the cosmetics over the white of the 1. Its a great bike, stiff but compliant. The only upgrade I am now considering is the wheels which are the same as on the 1. Did 100 mile ride on it yesterday and it did me proud. I passed many people on "better" carbon bikes clocking 5h28min for the 100 so it's plenty fast enough. It may be a little lighter than the 1 due to the upgraded components but there's not much in it.
I got mine from Chris's Bikes in Girton. He doesn't do credit but he does do discounts! Go for it. The manufacturer sets an RRP but the retailer is free to sell at a discount if he wishes.0 -
Hi Thanks for the useful feedback.
I do like the look of the Defy0 over the 1, and if it has some upgrades too then its perhaps worth it.
4 years ago I got back into cycling - got myself a mid-priced Sirrus. At the time I wasn't exactly sure how often, and where i'd be riding. So the Sirrus made sense. Still going to keep the Sirrus, and use it for family trail riding - perhaps also for winter..
In the last 18 months i've got into cycling more and more pushing up my speed and distance, mostly road riding. I think now is the time to upgrade to a full road bike setup- And the Defy0 is top of my list. I think its a good bike for the money. I've not read too many reviews of the zero. I've seen plenty of the (one), and they're all good - i think the zero -is just a (one) with an upgrade or two.
I'm not a racer - just looking for longer faster rides. What I've read is that the the Defy is setup to be a more relaxed comfy endurance ride - rather than an aggressive sporty racer. Is this what you've found.

The Defy geometry suits me nicely. It's a balance between comfort over longer rides but packs enough punch for the sprints to the next road sign.FCN 3 / 40

Hi Jon,
The 0 is an upgrade over the 1 and the Defy in general is a more relaxed position but it's not a full on sit up and beg machine either. It was designed for pro riders to do the spring classics like Paris-Roubaix so still retains a race pedigree but its not as aggressive as the TCR for example. I have messed about with spacers/stems to get a good position on long rides so that now I can ride for long hours with no discomfort. Depends on flexibility too. I am nearing 40 and have never been that flexible, even when I was younger. I went for the Defy for this reason thinking theat a TCR would be too aggressive. I passed quite a few yesterday! Go for the 0, you won't be disappointed.0 -
Hi All,
Really interested in peoples thoughts on this. I have just ordered a Defy 0 today. I currently ride a Felt F85, which has a fairly aggressive position, and really want something that is more comfortable for the sportives I am looking to do this summer. I went for the Defy based on positive feedback and sitting on one on a turbo in the new Giant store in Aldersgate! I am hoping I have made the right choice, but a mjor problem with being in central London is that you can't really test ride them and they rarely have anything in stock. It was between a Defy and a Scott Speedster as it is on the cyclescheme. Fingers crossed.

Sure you will be fine Aidan. just get it set up to your liking. How did you choose the correct size? The Defy can be adjusted over quite a wide range. I have mine in quite an aggressive position with the stem right down so about a 10cm seat to bar drop. With the spacer stack and being able to flip the stem you have a lot of options.0

I've phoned up a few LBS, all saying sold out. I can get sized up got to be sure of sizing. Got a 54 Specalized Sirus right now. So guess that puts me on needing a M. If I'm sure about the size I could consider an online order. If I can get a good price.
Any advice or recommendations.
Cheers, Jon.0 -
Jon, have you rung Chris as I suggested? he has them in stock or can get you one next day in most circumstances.
In Cambridge but worth the journey to get the bike you want.
How tall are you? 5"10 and I ride a M/L if it helps. Would normally go for a 56cm top tube.0 -
sent Chris an email - so will be interested in his reply.
Also looks like Edinburgh have stock - so they say:

and Tredz

Also Cycle Surgery

I've never shopped with any of the above before. Would rather support an LBS with buying a bike. Feel its good to get a personal service.

Hi Jon,
I had a similar experience, I was totally hooked on the Giant 2 following its positive review in a recent CP. My LBS, Palace Cycles in Carlisle, had just sold their last one, leaving me with a dilemna, do I drop down to the 3 or push the boat out for the 1. They enticed me with a generous discount and I haven't stopped smiling since. I am 5'10" also and I have got the M/L. It fits perfectly and is miles better than anything I have ridden in the past. I would encourage you to step up to the next level, so long as the bike shop is able to make it worth your while. Good luck.

Ok. He will probably reply tomorrow as the shop is shut sun/mon. Bear in mind the shop may have sold what they have but as they all get the bikes from the Giant depot in Leicester all they have to do is pick up the phone. You benefitted from a bit of upselling.0

Found out my lbs did have a defy0 ml. But it's a display model. They have only been in for a month or two. So I've just put a deposit down. As of tomorrow I'll be the proud owner of a new giant defy 0. ML.
Oh God hope I've done the right thing.

Congrats Jon,
As soon as you get it 1) Put pictures up and 2) Give us the lowdown. I am like a cat on a hot tin roof wondering if I have done the correct thing. Camcycle, with regards to sizing, they sized me on a Giant Defy 1, as they had plenty of those in stock. I have gone for a M/L. I find not having the long top tube quite strange, but then I am a really odd shape. I am 6.3 but only have a 31 inch inseam, which means my torso is freakishly long.0 -
Don't worry guys, the bike is awesome. Averaged 18mph on my 100mile ride on Sunday. Get fit and the bike will do the rest. Not sure at 6"3 if you will feel a bit cramped on a M/L. Due to the sloping TT you will have a fair bit of seat post showing anyway. My mate just bought an advanced, he's 6"2 and went for a large. If they fitted you then I guess it will be fine.0

The problem is my leg length. Even with the M/L I have about 1/2 inch at best stand over clearance. I'm a freak *sigh*0 -
May be you should avoid the Defy as its geometry doesn't suit your body shape. I reckon you should buy a bike that offers you a longer top tube but that is my recommendation.x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

I think sizing is so important.
Today I sat on both the M and the ML I decided, with the help of the fella in the shop to got for the ML. I'm 5'10", but felt abit bunched up on the M, the ML was more comfy and relaxed. So I feel I've made a good choice.
I think the best advice about buying a new bike above all else is don't compromise on the size. Don't buy the bike of your dreams half price at the wrong size.
Well I hope I've got my sizing right. Hard to be 100% sure, till their are a few miles on the clock. Anyway I should be picking up my new defy0 tomorrow. Will keep you posted on how I find it.

Yes but with more standard road geometry he will not have enough stand over on a 56 or bigger frame. At least the sloping tt on the defy allows him to buy a bigger frame. Maybe the tcr might be better as it has a longer tt than the defy?0 -
The TCR is exactly the kind of more aggressive position I am trying to avoid. My current Felt f85 has a long top tube and aggressive ish position and by the time i get to forty plus miles my back seizes. I want so.ething more 'sportive' which the defy is.0
-
But you are still compromising with a Defy as you have a very particular body shape. May be what you need is a frame made to measure instead of another compromise. That is my opinion.
Also, whilst the Giant Defy is a nice bike, so are many more. Do not get to hung up on magazine reviews.x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x

Ok, fair enough. I know lots of people who ride both with no massive adaptation to be made between the two. If the Defy sets up better for you then go for it, it's a great bike.0 -
Hi - Been riding the Giant Defy0 ML now for a few weeks. Have to say I'm very impressed. The ride feels comfortable and relaxed. But I've quickly gotten into using the Drops. Average speeds have increased too. I do need to get out in some fair weather without lots of wind to see exactly how much faster this bike is Vs the Sirrus. But Love it would recommend the Defy to anyone.
And it's when you do get your head down in the drops the pace picks up - this bike flys!

how are you finding the bike now? have you hit any hills on it yet.....considering this bike as well as a few othersBoardman CX Team

Have to say I'm loving this new bike.
It's recently undergone its first service everything now very sharp. And it's rolling really smooth. Gears are super fast too. Climbs well I'd say, but my legs are going to let me down on that one before the bike would.
Plus I've had lots of comments that it looks good too with the blue black combo.
Always looking forward to the next ride.0
