Square taper BB spindle length?

Hey guys,

I have recently been to a track day and really enjoyed it, all except the hire bikes. I have an old fixed frame with most of what I need on it except a crank and I also have an old fsa square taper crank (don't know the model as its been scratch off). However, I need advice on what spindle length to get for the best fit for the crank. They are a double road crank which I am intending to change to a single ring...has anyone got any idea how to measure the best bb spindle length?

Unless you know the actual crank model, then it'll probably be down to experimentation i.e. fit one, measure chainline and take it from there.
