Locking up drivetrain

hi all im after some advice. I went out on the south downs today and the conditions were terrible in places, really thick mud and clay that sticks to the bike. The drive train got covered in mud which i tried clearing as best as possible. I have full shimano XT drive train with the chain correctly lubed. Occasionally the chain would suck into the chainrings and lock; only back pedalling would allow rotation again. Also the gears where jumping around a bit, i.e. i would be in a number 4 on the cassette and it would suddenly change up and then back down a few times The indexing seems pretty good though and has not done this before the muddy conditions. Are both these problems associated to the bad mud build up and is there anything/products that i could use to help reduce/prevent from occurring?
This also happened at mountain mayhem last year on a full SRAM X9 kit and was very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like chain suck (google it). Not a lot you can do other than try to use new parts together and keep it as clean as you can.0

Doesn't sound like chainsuck. Just sounds like big gloops of clay and stuff.I don't do smileys.

If it happens all the time maybe. If it's just in horrible mud I'd tend to blame the mud first.I don't do smileys.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think its chain suck alhough the symtons are there. I say this beacuse the drivetrain is pretty much brand new, and only occurs when muddy, not when climbing etc.
Im not being funny, but you would think in this day and age with modern technology and the cost of rear mechs, XT and SRAM X9 not being the cheapest for example, that these sort of issues should not be part of the operation and unavoidable. Apart from trying to keep the drivetrain clean, is there really nothing that will help? Would any adjustments to be the B screw help?

No certainly not.
A clutch mech may help, otherwise something like Alphine.0
