My Defy 2 has Shimano Tiagra compact 9spd crankset that i'd like to upgrade.

I was looking at Ultegra or Dura Ace but they all seem to be 10spd?

What would you suggest in a compact 9spd that's light and stiff?

The speed is irrelevant, a 10 will be fine.

In fact the notion of upgrading is somewhat misplaced as in reality there is very little difference.

If what you have is functioning I would say save your money.

My CAAD 5 also has Tiagra 9 speed and it is fine.

    ^-^ Agree with above.

Your not going to notice any of the weight saving TBH & unless your a super strong rider doubt you will find many cranks that are not stiff enough to do the job.

If cost were not an issue then would say go with the DA or perhaps as another option Rotor cranks but would really need to change the whole unit not just the cranks to see any benefit of from them.

If your looking to get some weight out of your bike for performance perhaps look at wheels/tyres, BB, stem, saddle, seat post.
Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.
  • Something like a FSA SLK-Light may feel smoother, whereas a Rotor may feel stiffer. I probably wouldn't bother upgrading unless I was swapping between a standard double and a compact.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Upgrading your crankset will offer little discernible difference for the money involved be it 9 or 10 speed. Spend the money involved on upgrading things like wheels/tyres where you will perhaps notice a difference (but maybe not as much as you would hope for the money)

Agree with the above. It's not an upgrade - you won't notice any difference.
Tyres and wheels. Oh and flash sunglasses. I find they help the most.

If you MUST upgrade your crankset, then a 6700 Ultegra would be the obvious choice. You could use your current bottom bracket and the shifting is superior to the likes of FSA, etc. But as others have said, with the £150 or so it would cost to buy and the additional costs of fitting, you could put the money to better use to increase your enjoyment more.

You'll save 300g by putting on Red brake callipers at £75 a pop.

For the crankset, SRAM 2013 Force (was 2012 Red) every time.

I'd only upgrade when you wear it out. 6700 is a good chainset though, can't tell much difference between that and my dura-ace. I picked up my 6700 chainset for £100 brand new on ebay, although this was a double not a compact..

Would you not be better off selling the whole thing and buying something different if weight is a priority? Can't help but think it'll be like one of those souped up cars in a late night retail park car park. Yes, it may have cost you £35k, but it's still a fiesta.

I know what your saying. I tend to upgrade components til I eventually re-frame them

Built a few of my XC bikes up this way. I know its expensive but I end up with exactly what I want :)
