hi I noticed over the weekend that my chain rubs when using the 39/13 gear combo. I have a 39/50 at the front and 13/26 t the rear. It is rubbing against the inside of my big 50 gear i guess due to the angle. any suggestion. Dont really want to have to adjust the front mesh as its shifting pretty well but will if i cant use those gears together anymore!

it's best to avoid using the two largest sprockets when on the big ring and the two smallest sprockets when on the small ring

using small-small, chain rub is very likely, the angle the chain runs at also causes extra stress and wear

so this is a fairly common issue then? happy to avoid using those gears if needs be. would only adjust if an easy quick fix

    thanks

the common term for using the big-big or small-small combinations is 'cross chaining', if you google you'll find plenty on the topic

Keep the chain "in line" as stright as possible, they don't like working sideways.

Yeah, you don't want to be doing that.

Using the 50t on the front and a 16 or 17 on the rear will give you almost the same gear anyway.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

thanks all. will stay away from the 53/13 combo and work around it.

No, no wait. It's more than OK to use 53-13 or 53-12. Shouldn't be any chain rub anywhere with a 53 tooth front ring unless it rubs on the front D(which it shouldn't) or you're using it on one of the larger 2 or 3 cogs(23 to 27?) in the back which you shouldn't do. Also the smaller ring in the front should not be used on the 2 or 3 smallest(11-12-13-14) cogs in back. This MAY cause what some call "chain dink". It's happens because the angle of the chain causes it to sometimes touch the large ring.

^but 13 is his smallest cog so it is the one (and probably the next one too) that he should avoid.

There is a little confusion whether the front is a 50 or bigger - obviously it's more common to have 52/39 than 50/39 - but the angle to the smallest cog is the issue rather than the size of it.

He was saying he should stay away from 53-13, yet that's what he should be using. Maybe I'm a little confused? Wouldn't be the first time.
Big ring for small back cogs.
Small ring for big rear cogs.

You're right, I misread that - looks like he meant to say 39/13.
