Campag rear wheel flex

My rear wheel has a small but noticeable wobble using a Campag hub (10~11 speed). There is no adjustment to fix this because the axle simply slides into the hub shaft with no adjustment. The fixing bolts simply lock the axle in place and no amount of tension on these bolts will reduce the wobble.

But it's only a marginal wobble - approx 0.5~1mm at the rim. So is this just tolerance or a sign that the entire hub needs replacing?

It's sort of useful to be specific with this sort of question - Campag make different wheels with different bearings so if you don't say what your wheels are then the response will be neccessarily more vague. If the bearings are cup and cone you might need new bearings or you might need a new hub. If they are sealed bearings, you probably just need to replace the bearings and the hub should be fine.

If its a Record type hub you might just need to screw in the lockring a bit like in Fig.10 here http://www.campagnolo.com/repository/documenti/en/7225312_RECORD_Hubs_0407.pdf
  • I had a similar issue. Although when the wheel is on the bike, there is no movement at all.

The clamping of the wheel together with the skewer removes any movement. Not done up overly tight either.

This axle has a simple shaft bearing with no bearings so no adjustment was possible. And to answer a question from another commenter, when the wheel was clamped to the frame, the wobble was still present. It was fitted some time ago (4~5 years) so I suspect it's just wear and tear. Poor quality for Campag in my experience, but then it's no longer available and out of warranty.

Since I suspect it's not fixable, I ordered a new Record axle and am now rebuilding the wheel.

Not being to adjust a small bit of wheel wobble out does not sound like any hub I've ever had.

Also I'll cast my vote for it NOT being "Poor quality for Campag....". Nothing in this world is perfect, and Campy is no exception, and neither are bike mechanics but from your vague description of things I vote for operator error.

I'm happy to accept the axle was not poor quality. But this axle was a simple shaft system and prone to wear in a way that a ball-bearing based hub would not. Plus there was no method to adjust for wear and tear. It was a few years old so I guess it was from a mid or low-end groupset. The newly re-built wheel with the Record axle has a bearing adjustment which the original hub did not have. Being from the Record group, it should last a long time.
